I also remember the denouement being extremely clever and satisfying (and unfortunately, or not, am watching it now with my remembered knowledge of who the traitor is)... but possibly I was rather harsh to write off the first five eps as merely set-up.
Tweet by me on June 4th 2015: Ep6 of The Game paid off everything set up over the previous episodes beautifully. Very clever. But the 1st 5 eps were basically all set-up

Revisiting my tweets from the time, I remember I was impatient to watch it...
Tweet by me from April 15th 2015:

Finally the BBC gives s tx date for The Game (Apr 30th)! Can only presume this has been victim of BBC politics for some reason. A shame.

Thoroughly enjoyed Altered Images tonight, running through the Happy Birthday album in full and projecting more power and drama than I've ever picked up from the album. Excellent second part to the set really was hit after hit after hit.

But the main event. The main man. It's JFM: Johnny Fuckin Marr. Utterly triumphant hometown show, with abundant Smiths songs, solo songs that held their own and the crowd clearly recognised, and enough Manchester flag-waving to make it proper (but thankfully not too much}.

Everything Everything never said why they were wearing black armbands. In honour of Bonnie Tyler, presumably. They didn't do a cover of Total Eclipse of the Heart though, the cowards.

It's so charming seeing whiteboy support acts these days. "This is a perfectly competent and palatable version of music I was listening to when you were in infants" sounds like a terrible slam, but it really isn't! Or at least, I don't mean it to be.

Interesting to reflect on my tweet from 2022! Still basically agree, especially about PWB. But Graham did well in 2023 tbf.
A tweet from the night of Eurovision 2022 in which I wrote:
I do wonder if Graham Norton has been poking fun of the presenter fill bits safe in the knowledge he'd never be challenged to do better...

If the UK ever wins, get Phoebe Waller-Bridge to write the in-between bits.

Well that was great. Reminded me a little of Jane Weaver's show at Esquires last year, partly because there's a bit of musical similarity (though you can overstate that), but more because they both have great back catalogues to draw on, so the quality's really there.

It's Bedford Who Charity Con for this year! A particularly warm and interesting panel with Colin Baker, Jo Martin and David Bradley. (When asked by Colin, Jo prevaricated about whether she might be appearing in the show again, and didn't deny it!)

Liberated the spindles this weekend. They had 60 or so years in use before they got covered up, so there are some knocks and scuffs on there. Will need some work before they're ready for painting.
Stairs in my flat, with spindles exposed, in dark Victorian wood stain, in contrast to the teal gloss paint on the banister.

John Kell @johnkell.bsky.social · 04/01/2026
Full set of spindles, all in good nick except from minor damage when the board was nailed on (and, er, also when it was taken off). That's the original Victorian wood stain still on them. I'll get to the second board next weekend, and start sanding and filling ahead of painting it all.

Or rather, there was. I'd always guessed there might be spindles missing or some other problem that meant it needed boarding over. But I'm a bit more confident with DIY these days, and I'd started to wonder... So today, off it came!

Seem to have started a new DIY project. The stairs in my flat have always had this wooden panel where you'd expect to see spindles. In fact it's some sort of modern-ish fibre board - I know because I stripped all the paint off when I repainted it all. There's another one on the inside face.

Someone's about to get a visit from the ghost of their former business partner for starters...
A Bluesky message, in reply to something wholly unrelated, that had barged into a popular Christmas Eve hashtag as follows:

I doubt the word "compromised" has ever before been asked to bear as much weight as it is here.
Screen grab of the listing for Missing Believed Wiped session 2, from the BFI website.

The extract reads:
The Guild of Television Producers and Directors present their Merit Awards for 1968. A fascinating snapshot of television at the time, featuring extended clips (including some from programmes that have not survived). Infamously, the event’s broadcast was compromised by the death of the host, Kenneth Horne, half-way through the ceremony, leading to some deft editing and last-minute cover from the unflappable Michael Aspel.
