In this year his most famous student sported only yet some bumfluff, but the future great beard was already reading much and "dilligent", and his teacher... well so much was set out for the future here: translating almost all of the Bard, meeting with Hörner, teaching on Homer, promoting Quixote, chatting elephants, juggernauts, India/EIC-hatreds, with GWFH as 'the enemy camp', cosmopolitainism, university politics, criticism and more.

Here is the news
Hasn’t the sheer abundance of chit-chat made criticism, and even journalism you pay for, obsolete? Articles that would bug most people aren’t even read because something else more accessible, shorter, free, and less threatening, commandeers attention. Writing in an amusement park that has been expended across the entire city, the entire country, the earth, the galaxy, the universe (as we once filled in our schoolbooks).

Jungle Studies: the state of Anthropology. 2002 Futures 34: 15-31
The anthropological project, tired and exhausted after years searching for ‘methodological absolution’, remains mired in a spiral of self-doubt and self-indulgent ‘crisis’. Anthropological teaching continues the very complicities that a self-critical reflexivity professed to avoid. Cooption and incorporation, even at the best of times. This essay asks just what would break the cycle of ‘suicidal rejoicing’ for an ‘end of anthropology’ that never comes, that continues to be taught anew, over and over?

Slavery and raids in the early colonial Philippines.
Note to self. A debate could be had as to whether the imputation of a local slave trading regime is imposed or copied from outside. No less than the Philippines’ national hero José Rizal had annotated an edition of Antonio de Morga, in which Morga explains that the Spanish, 100 years earlier than his writing in 1602, had effectively made space for the Mindanao and Sebu Mohammadans to begin raids on the…

Powis Castle – monstrous collection of booty thieved from India by addled druggie and his daughter-in-law
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ “The last hereditary Welsh prince, Owain Gruffydd ap Gwenwynwyn, built Powis castle as a craggy fort in the 13th century; the estate was his reward for abandoning Wales to the rule of the English monarchy. But its most spectacular treasures date from a much later period of English conquest and appropriation: Powis is simply awash with loot from India, room after room of imperial plunder, extracted by the East India Company in the 18th century.
Note for an anthropology of tourism development
Anthropologists, somewhat unconsciously, remained for a long time in the position of conservative culture camp commandants—overseers of a pickled-in-aspic view of 'the native' that was not far removed from colonial explorer adventure safari or, at best, pastoralising advocacy and brokerage. In contemporary anthropologies—for example such as the anthropology of tourism when it becomes too close to tourism management studies—we can see clearly that heritage still has has some part to play in hesitations to take up such a gate-keeping role, yet it is undeniably still there and to overstate the naivety of local communities is a mistake.
