This morning I got to witness the ceremonial 'hanging up of the brooms' outside my neighbourhood hardware store. Felt like I witnessed something secret and special. Such a tiny shop. And so many brooms!

At least 8 different types of broom hanging outside a tiny local hardware store.

And now, one wholesome Pixar film later, time to shift tone a little...

UZUMAKI graphic novel by Junji Ito.

Amazing Saturday night double-bill of bonkers Demon Slayer anime action and anniversary absailing baby-rescuing re-release of John Woo's Hard Boiled. All of today's writing WILL BE IN ALL CAPS!!!

Funky art on the wall where I had a dinner date. We didn't fancy that boat's chances much!

Funky art of a massive whale bursting forth from the ocean sending other water creatures tumbling, all against crimson sun.

The same picture as before but I've daubed a crude circle and arrow pointing to a tiny boat at the bottom of the picture that looks like the colossal whale is about to belly flop onto.

"Friends" is a beloved American sitcom that aired from 1994 to 2004, following six young adults—Rachel, Ross, Monica, Chandler, Joey, and Phoebe—living in New York City. The show explores their friendships, romances, careers, and personal growth over ten seasons.

A picture that definitely isn't the cast of 90s one-season wonder 'American Gothic' with the title crudely crossed out and 'Friends' inserted over it. No chance.

We watched WONDER MAN so therefore had to rewatch the Trevor Slattery short ALL HAIL THE KING featuring Scoot McNairy so will now obviously be watching MONSTERS. These are the rules.

An image from MONSTERS. Scoot McNairy stands in front of a border wall with painted with images of tanks and helicopters in combat with giant tentacular beasties who are secretly quite romantic. Wait... then who are the monsters? OMG!!

Just clocked that Nida Manzoor's genius gem POLITE SOCIETY is on the Channel 4 app for the next few weeks. Best aspirational stuntwoman anti-romcom out there IMO! Love this film #recommended

The graphic novel got a recent re-release which is what made me aware of the show. Just on the offchance you'd missed it too. A lot's happened since the 50s (duh) so intrigued to see what's thematically changed and remained. #GraphicNovels

Lovely Friday night viewing of IT CAME FROM OUTER SPACE on the Ch4 app. Not seen it before. Amazing music and trousers.

The gloriously technicolour poster - characters reel from an uncanny sight as smaller images display alien craft, meteorites and staring inhuman eyes.

If honest, there's far more gaslighting of romantic elephants in this Sherlock Holmes videogame than you might expect...

The back of a bowing young Victorian gentleman introducing a real elephant to a conspicuously inflatable elephant.

One day I'll make a 'broth' where the spoon doesn't stand upright but ooof, all the ginger and chilli was a welcome jolt after festive potato week!

A bowl of surprisingly viscous noodle broth with chilli, spring onion and smoked tofu.

... anyway, several podcasts later, I'm up and giving Frogwares' Sherlock Holmes: Chapter One a go. If it's not Christmas, it's probably Victorian crime keeping me awake, right?

A young, dapper Sherlock Holmes sits in an armchair in front of a wall adorned with clues linked by red twine.

Not a scientific study, but working my way through all the decades of Archie Xmas comics, the ones from the 80s definitely seemed the kindest and cosiest. Several others had a lot of Dickensian karma and the 70s, everyone was just festive jerks. Just FYI :)

Back to my #DeathStranding replay after time off to finish work - and now all the characters have festive hats! For a game about a character impossibly delivering stuff, I really was playing this at the wrong time of year fiest time round!

No shortage of great Jeff Bridges roles, and yeah the Dude's iconic, but 'The Fisher King' was formatively vital in fantastical pathos to this 90s teen! (See also John Carpenter's 'Starman')

Good morning! I've just finished 'Once Was Willem' by MR Carey which I loved (and would recommend to anyone still vibing after GDT's 'Frankenstein') It made for a really vivid hat-trick of November reads!

Coup de Grâce by Sofia Ajram (haunting novella with trigger warnings and empathy)
Batman Revolution by John Jackson Miller (atmospheric and energetic Batman prose set between Tim Burton's films)
Once Was Willem by MR Carey (12th century sorcery backfires on a wily antagonist via our sympathetic resurrected narrator)

I'd heartily recommend all of these!

I'm exceedingly late to @ssnyder1835.bsky.social and @ffrancavilla.bsky.social's NIGHT OF THE GHOUL party but this is such an absorbing and atmospheric self-contained mythology as revealed through a compact but expansive plot and creeping dread. Er, perfect Sunday reading? #HorrorComics
