John Hodgkinson @johnhodgkinson.bsky.social · 28/09/2026Yes along with that “Twenty writers on their favourite biscuit” nonsense. 040
John Hodgkinson @johnhodgkinson.bsky.social · 18/09/2026It’s not just you. It’s horrible. We’re just dropping in for the races and hoping to tune out all the bullshit. 111
John Hodgkinson @johnhodgkinson.bsky.social · 10/09/2026@nicholaspegg.bsky.social Important research here 030
John Hodgkinson @johnhodgkinson.bsky.social · 31/08/2026And there’s a lot of development round here. A hundred yards away a car park is being turned into a block of flats. I’ve seen no glossy leaflets and ready-printed objection forms about that. 110
John Hodgkinson @johnhodgkinson.bsky.social · 31/08/2026I hope you’re right. I’ll never understand why people in what we used to call Inner London are so attached to their cars, assuming they’re able bodied. But I can’t help feeling it’s more sinister than that. I’m surprised at the anonymity if their motives are benign. 110
John Hodgkinson @johnhodgkinson.bsky.social · 31/08/2026Who on here lives around Tottenham? Has anyone seen who’s posting this racist crap through our doors, or got an idea who’s funding them? 120
John Hodgkinson @johnhodgkinson.bsky.social · 18/08/2026Which one in particular? Their website still has eight from the first week of August. When have they ever subjected a white academic to this relentless scrutiny? 100
John Hodgkinson @johnhodgkinson.bsky.social · 15/08/2026I’ve signed this but it wasn’t just right wing papers. The Guardian is culpable as well. 220
John Hodgkinson @johnhodgkinson.bsky.social · 04/08/2026David Quantick, I think, on Nick Griffin: “looks like a cunt’s butler”. 0280
John Hodgkinson @johnhodgkinson.bsky.social · 22/07/2026I’m hanging on for Seven Sisters. High Road entrance for preference although that’s probably not the most interesting. It’s not a very attractive station, to be fair. 220
John Hodgkinson @johnhodgkinson.bsky.social · 17/07/2026This one did make me laugh, but probably only for the same reason those chimpanzees used to laugh on tea commercials. 000
John Hodgkinson @johnhodgkinson.bsky.social · 16/07/2026Although there would have been uproar anyway, obviously. I do admire that man’s resilience. 110
John Hodgkinson @johnhodgkinson.bsky.social · 16/07/2026Honestly I’m ignorant about this and it’s a genuine question. 100
John Hodgkinson @johnhodgkinson.bsky.social · 16/07/2026Is it impossible to lead the government from the House of Lords? Lord Salisbury did it 130 years ago or so. Have the rules changed? 100
John Hodgkinson @johnhodgkinson.bsky.social · 15/07/2026Well done for respecting that hilarious little umlaut there. I can’t remember if I’ve read the tango essay, which means I should read it again. 110
John Hodgkinson @johnhodgkinson.bsky.social · 11/05/2026Just over three years, on and off, on stage and on screen, I’ve been involved with this story. What a delightful journey. It’ll be on tv soon. 021
John Hodgkinson @johnhodgkinson.bsky.social · 09/05/2026How many fags does Jack Nicholson smoke in Chinatown? It’s heroic. 120
John Hodgkinson @johnhodgkinson.bsky.social · 09/05/2026Some reform bloke on the radio just said “making Essex great again”. Kill me now. 010
John Hodgkinson @johnhodgkinson.bsky.social · 02/05/2026Oh god it’s a parody! I completely misunderstood and my lack of learning is exposed! 110
John Hodgkinson @johnhodgkinson.bsky.social · 02/05/2026You know incomparably more about this stuff than I do, but this is just straightforwardly funny isn’t it? And it’s deliberate (not like that Wordsworth thing about the child’s grave), with all sorts of subtext. I can imagine if you were speaking it aloud to an audience it would be a gift. 110
Reposted by John Hodgkinsonmave @mave.bsky.social · 10/07/2023As a tall person I cannot offer to reach something on a high shelf for a stranger, yet if they ask me I must oblige. This is the law of the giants 872555443
John Hodgkinson @johnhodgkinson.bsky.social · 15/03/2026This is great. I saw Jonathan Pryce in R. Eyre’s stage production in the 1980s, in which the ghost seemingly burst out of Pryce’s body. Or his imagination. My first ‘serious’ play. I still think that choice makes sense. And it freed future actors to take a psychological approach to the play. 011
John Hodgkinson @johnhodgkinson.bsky.social · 17/02/2026“It’s all very well to scream at me that the medical establishment knows best”. Here’s someone characterising factual disagreement or mild criticism as “screaming”. I see this more and more, and it never convinces me to trust the author. 020
John Hodgkinson @johnhodgkinson.bsky.social · 15/02/2026I think you’re right. I had most of these books (I’m amazed to see how many!) and they presented a view of the world that was prevalent in the 60s/70s. I don’t have that view now. Those books inspired a love of learning in me, and I’m grateful for them, even if I don’t subscribe to their politics. 130
John Hodgkinson @johnhodgkinson.bsky.social · 10/02/2026@annaturley.bsky.social Please, please learn what the word fulsome means. You just used it about eight times on the radio and I don’t think you know what it means. 010
John Hodgkinson @johnhodgkinson.bsky.social · 31/01/2026No, he was taken along the first time and found it so incredible that he persuaded friends to join him for repeat visits. 120
John Hodgkinson @johnhodgkinson.bsky.social · 31/01/2026A friend of mine saw this several times, and still talks, with a faraway look in his eyes, of “The Fields of Ambrosia where everyone knows ya.” 200
John Hodgkinson @johnhodgkinson.bsky.social · 31/01/2026Probably a coincidence, but I’ve heard three right wingers on the Today Programme this week - Montgomerie, Shriver, Grothman - and they all sounded like they were on powerful tranquilisers. Slow, slurred speech. Vagueness. Anyone else noticed this? 010
John Hodgkinson @johnhodgkinson.bsky.social · 28/12/2025“The murky hands of globalist technocrats”. Apart from everything else, can one have murky hands? 120
John Hodgkinson @johnhodgkinson.bsky.social · 23/12/2025Slightly off topic but are those ears real? 110
John Hodgkinson @johnhodgkinson.bsky.social · 09/12/2025I’m in the UK but thanks, I’ll look into it. 010
John Hodgkinson @johnhodgkinson.bsky.social · 08/12/2025Oh great! My 29 year old son is into left wing politics, the union movement, non-league football, grass roots cricket and veganism. That makes him sound like a pain in the arse but actually he’s great and funny. I’m just a bit stuck for a book this year. He also likes post punk music eg The Fall. 241
John Hodgkinson @johnhodgkinson.bsky.social · 16/11/2025And I still can’t see one. But this is just awful. Wicked. I feel conned. 000
