Reese Kaplan -- What to Do With Expensive Players on the Roster
If we threw a dart at the wall regarding bad David Stearns decisions this past year there would be a pretty big crowd of potential targets between poor performances, injuries and wasted money.  We could single out any of them for further analysis but the one we’ll consider today is sub Mendoza recovering hitter Jorge Polanco. Remember him? For a refresher, in 2026 Polanco only played in 37 games and appeared for just 135 ABs.  Mind  you he was being paid $17 million to produce just 2 HRs and 6 RBIs.  Had he made a full season’s worth of playing time he would have racked up 8 HRs and 24 RBIs for that rather immense paycheck.   Now to be fair, he fought off his share of injuries which not only kept him off the field but also impacted his ability to perform as expected.  In 2025 he hit .261 with 26 HRs and 78 RBIs.  While those numbers are pretty solid they are not exactly All Star worthy.  Still, his positional versatility and long track record of decent hitting suggested that maybe obtaining him wasn’t completely idiotic, though to play first base regularly seemed pretty much an out in left field kind of decision. Going into 2027 the poor contract gets worse. The paycheck jumps $6 million to $23 million for the year.  If he wasn’t worth $17 million last year then who here votes that he’s a sure bet to make David Stearns look good on the upcoming $23 million burden? The first question about Polanco, of course, is health.  It is unfair to expect anyone to produce at career levels if they are not physically able.  If indeed the medical staff proclaims the man fit to play 150 or more games for the upcoming season where does he play? The original plan for him to man first base is still a possibility.  No one knows defensively how well he would cope there and the worry still remains that he is a fragile player prone to missing extended periods of time on the IL  He is a switch hitter which means traditional platooning doesn’t immediately fit.  The Jared Young believers want him to get a significant amount of playing time but his resume suggests that 2026 may have been an outlier. Designated Hitter is another possibility which would remove the physical strain of playing the field in a defensive position.  Given how little the Mets have ever gotten out of the DH position it is a distinctly reasonable thought that a 2025-like Polanco would be a nice fit there.  Again, being a switch hitter he would be expected to play nearly every day. Another option for Polanco is to lean on his 420 career games played as a second baseman.  Obviously there are more competence than health issues with incumbent Marcus Semien.  He’s being paid even more money than the 2027 Polanco, but at some point you have to swallow bad investments and many advocate the Mets do just that.  Could Polanco be a second baseman next to Francisco Lindor and whomever mans first base? That position would seem to be more physically demanding than would first base but it could temporarily solve a glaring need in the Mets lineup.  Right now the prospect of flushing away the bad contracts from the just concluded season does not seem to apply conveniently to Polanco.  Consequently if he’ going to be on the roster you need to figure out what to do with him.  Having a $23 million bench player is not smart but then having a $26 million one in Semien isn’t either.

MACK - Chain Position Analysis - Second Base
Moving on to second... this position not only looks deep, but very promising. There are two rising RED prospects that, not only are showing signs of being a future, productive major league second baseman, but also have the ability to play on short and third as well. Thank the draft for one and the last trading period for the other: RED PROSPECTS -  AAA/Syracuse - Emilien Pitre - (23) - Pitre's big splash last season was at the AA level, where he hit a combined .335 for two teams. He was then promoted to AAA where he debuted with a respectful .260. One of the important things here is Pitre can also play SHORTSTOP. Another LHH. The most important thing is, in 2026, for four teams at three levels (AAA/AA/A+) he hit .306/.420/.427/847, 80-BB, 35-SB, and struck out only 58 times in 415-AB. Most of this time was spent at the AA level, where he hit .335. Me? I can't find anything bad here and, though I like the other RED prospect more, I can't see a reason to move this guy aside.  AA/Binghamton - Mitch Voit - First. This is the 2026 Mets Player of the Year. Do I need to say more? By the book, Voit also offers versatility, being able to play both short and third. In AA/Binghamton this season, he hit an amazing .347/.430/.517/.947. Combined A+/AA: 411-AB, 94-K, 51-BB, 45-SB, 13-HR, 59-RBI. Like Pitre, there is nothing bad here.  BLUE PROSPECTS -  A+ /Brooklyn - Sammy Stafura - (21) - Love the age. Hit .301 at the A+ level prior to being traded to the Mets. After, .244. A+/A combined 2026 stat line: 303/AB, 102-K, 22-HR, 59-RBI, 41-BB, 22-SB, .267/.364/.545/.909. Plays short as well as he plays second. Hit .333 in last 28 days. .272 against RHP, .246 vs. LHP. Local boy (Westchester County).  FCL - Yorber Semprum - (19) - LHH - Opened the season strong for DSLO (.389) and quickly promoted to the FCL Mets. Decent start in Florida: 62-AB, 18-K, 7-BB, 2-HR, 8-RBI, .258/.352/.435/.788. Also, can play short and third. .326 at home. .235 away. .311 vs. RHP. ALMOST PROSPECTS -  AAA/Syracuse - Vidal Brujan - (28) - SWH - also plays short and in the outfield. Free agent 2029. Played 2026 primarily at the AAA level: 216-AB, 41-K, 35-BB, 5-HR, 34-RBI, 16-SB, .278/.385/.421/.807. 11 at-bats for the Mets (.091). A nice emergency AAAA player that I hope the Mets keep around. AA/Binghamton - Marco Vargas - (21) - LHH - also plays short and third. Played primary at the AA level in 2026: 209-AB, 68-K, 27-BB, 28-SB, 3-HR, 29-RBI, .282/.363/.407/.770. .390 last 28 days. .291 at home. .264 away. .297 vs. RHP, .271 vs. LHP. .333 in August. Missed two months due to an "undisclosed injury". MACK - Both excellent talent and depth here. Also, tremendous versatility in being able to play multiple positions. I'm particularly impressed with the speed, both on the bases but also in the field. Pitre is going to graduate first, probably by the 2027 break, but Voit is going to make it interesting when he's ready. Francisco Lindor better start hitting and playing better D in the field or he could be out a starting position in a year or two. I try not to get too excited about prospects that have done nothing yet at the parent level, but, on the surface, I would say that both mid-infield positions easily though this decade. Rating - A+

R.I.P. Sudden Sam McDowell : The Man Who Walked Willie Mays in His First At-Bat as a Met
Sam McDowell died Monday at his home in The Villages, Florida. He was 84. If you're under 50, that name might not ring a bell, which is a crying shame, because for about a decade Sudden Sam McDowell threw a baseball harder than any living human, and he did it while essentially being a character from a movie. (In fact, he was partly a character from a TV show. We'll get to that.) They called him "Sudden Sam" because of exactly one spring training outing in 1961. A Cleveland sportswriter...

Amazing Away Games: Houston Astrodome. Piazza Bashes Unhittable Wagner.
September 16, 1998. Mets 4, Astros 3 (11) It seems like every pitcher today can ramp it up close to 100 mph. The starter gives it everything he's got at 98 to get through 4.1 to 5 innings. The bullpen guys throw one inning each, with the fastest getting it past 100 to 104! But what seems to me like only a few years ago (Get off my lawn!), a starting pitcher would throw 8 or hopefully 9 innings, with your closer coming in late, often throwing his own brand of junk to fool the hitter. I'm...

RVH - The Bichette Decision Tree
The $84 Million Question In January, Bo Bichette chose the Mets over seven years and roughly $200 million from Philadelphia. He didn't choose security. He chose control. This winter, he finds out what that control is worth. The popular framing is a coin flip. Opt out or opt in. Stay or go. But that isn't how players and agents actually make these decisions, and it isn't how we should analyze it either. Bichette isn't making one choice. He's walking a decision tree. Each branch closes off some outcomes and opens others, and the order of the questions matters as much as the answers. So let's walk it the way his camp likely will. Node by node. The Contract: Three One-Year Bets Stapled Together The headline was three years, $126 million. The structure is something else entirely. Bichette can opt out after 2026 or after 2027. Opting out comes with a $5 million buyout. And if he walks, the Mets cannot tag him with a qualifying offer, because he already turned one down from Toronto last November. (AP, Empire Sports Media) Path Guaranteed money Next decision point Market age Opt out now $5M buyout + whatever the market pays None (new deal) Entering age-29 season Opt in $42M for 2027 Second opt-out after 2027 Entering age-30 season Opt in twice $84M through 2028 None Entering age-31 season The real number at risk isn't $84 million. It's about $79 million, net of the buyout. And the honest way to think about it is narrower still. Opting in doesn't lock him into two years. It buys him one more year at $42 million and a second look at the same door. That's the first thing most coverage misses. Opting in is not the conservative choice. It's the option-preserving choice. Two Seasons in One Uniform Bichette's final line reads like a disappointment: .260 average, .702 OPS, 18 home runs, 160 games, nearly all of them at a position he'd never played. (Heavy) But a full-season line is an average of two very different players. Split AVG / OBP / SLG wRC+ Opening Day through May .219 / .275 / .308 — June through mid-September .298 / .346 / .464 124 Career baseline .290 / .333 / .458 118 Source: MLB Trade Rumors, through mid-September We tracked the early version in real time here. By mid-May, he'd gone hitless in 40% of his games and failed to collect an extra-base hit in 84% of them. That wasn't a slump. That was a hitter adjusting to a new league, a new position, and a new city all at once. The June-forward player is just Bo Bichette. Same contact, same slug, same career shape. In fairness to the skeptics, and in fairness to my own preseason case for him as a high-leverage bat, the finish wasn't clean. He grounded into four double plays in the final two weeks while hitting behind Juan Soto. (Amazin' Avenue) Small sample. Still a bad look on the last page of the résumé. So which season does the market buy? That's the question the whole tree hangs on. The Decision Tree, Node by Node Five questions, asked in roughly the order an agent would ask them. The first two decide whether opting out is even rational. The last three decide whether it's wise. Bichette opt-out decision tree · 5 nodes, 3 outcomes Read it top to bottom. Opting out requires a yes at every gate. A single no anywhere sends him back to the Mets. Node 1: Which Bo is the market pricing? This is the gate. Everything else is downstream. If front offices weight the last four months, Bichette is a 29-year-old infielder with a 118–124 wRC+ profile who can play short, third, and second. That player gets five or more years. If they weight the full season, he's a league-average bat who just finished a year below his own standard. That player gets three years and opt-outs. Which is exactly the deal he already has. The test is simple. Does a multi-year offer exist that beats $42 million now plus another run at free agency next winter? If not, the tree ends here. He opts in. Node 2: What does the rest of the market look like? This is the strongest branch for opting out. The free-agent hitting class is thin, and Bichette would arguably be the best position player in it. (MLB Trade Rumors) Scarcity inflates prices. More importantly, he comes with no qualifying offer this time. Last winter, Philadelphia would have surrendered draft picks and international pool money to sign him. (Central Bucks News) This winter, he's free. That widens the bidder pool to teams that were never in it. Node 3: Is the calendar safe? This is the branch nobody wants to talk about. The collective bargaining agreement expires December 1. If talks stall and owners lock out the players, the free-agent market freezes. We saw it in 2021–22, when signings stopped cold from December to March. A player who opts out into a lockout is unemployed, uninsured against injury, and waiting. A player who opts in has $42 million locked regardless of what happens at the bargaining table. Labor risk doesn't make opting out wrong. It makes it more expensive. Node 4: Does he want to be here? In January, Bichette said his first priority was winning. The Mets missed the playoffs, fired their manager, and sold at the deadline. That cuts toward leaving. But the Mets just signed Andy Green to a three-year deal, and Bichette has spoken warmly about him. (MLB.com) He also has a full no-trade clause, a manager he trusts, and a year of third-base reps behind him. Comfort has value, especially for a player whose first two months in Queens were the hardest of his career. Node 5: Is there a third door? Opt in and opt out aren't the only exits. The Mets could approach his camp before the deadline about a longer deal: tear up the remaining structure and add years. That's the outcome that serves both sides if they believe the June-forward player is the real one. It's also the outcome Steve Cohen can afford to explore without much downside. The question is whether David Stearns wants to commit long-term to a converted third baseman who turns 29 in March. Scoring the Branches Lay the nodes side by side and the pattern is clear. The market pulls him out. The calendar and the clubhouse pull him back. Node Leans Strength 1. Which Bo is priced Toss-up Decisive 2. Thin market, no QO Opt out Strong 3. Labor calendar Opt in Strong 4. Fit with Green and the Mets Opt in Moderate 5. Extension door Stay, on new terms Depends on Stearns Here's how I'd weight the outcomes. These are my estimates, not anyone's reporting. Outcome RVH probability Opts in, revisits after 2027 45% Opts out, signs a long-term deal elsewhere 30% Stays on a reworked, longer Mets deal 25% The call: Bichette is a Met in 2027, roughly two times in three. Not because $42 million is a lot of money. Because the opt-in branch keeps every other branch alive. He can still reach free agency at 30. He just does it with a full, normal season on the résumé instead of a split one, and without a labor fight hanging over the market. The player who bet on control last January is most likely to keep betting on it. What It Means for the Mets The Mets don't control this decision. But they control how ready they are for either answer. If he opts in, third base is settled for 2027 and the Mets get a full-season read on the June-forward hitter before deciding anything long-term. That's the Dodgers' playbook from Part 5 of Rethinking the Mets: buy information, preserve options. If he opts out, $42 million comes off the 2027 books and the Mets get no draft pick in return. Third base reopens, and in a thin market, there may not be a clean replacement to buy. The worst outcome isn't losing Bichette. It's being surprised by it. Final Verdict The coin-flip framing undersells how structured this decision really is. The market says go. The calendar says wait. And the contract itself says he doesn't have to choose between them yet. Bichette bought optionality last January. Expect him to use it the way smart money usually does: by keeping it.

Paul Articulates - What is your take?
Every year as the season is completed and a new one looms, there is much speculation on what can be done to improve the weaknesses that prohibited the prior team from winning it all.  As the off-season evolves into the spring training season, the players begin showing their improvements and speculation turns to who will fill out the roster.  By the end of the spring, the predictions begin and we all weigh in on the projected destiny of the club. 2026 was the fiftieth year that we (at least those of us old enough to experience the ’86 series) have lamented that we just didn’t have enough to get it done.  Now we tentatively move into 2027, the season that might be cut short by CBA negotiations.  Inevitably, there will be some kind of agreement because neither the owners nor the players can afford to let an entire season pass by without a ticket being sold.  Let’s assume that a shortened season is the outcome. The open question today is, “What will it take for the Mets to compete for a short season championship”? Before answering, consider some facts: • The current teams playing in the 2026 playoffs are winning with the long ball.  All teams with the lowest HR totals have been eliminated except for the Cleveland Guardians who are hanging on by a thread. • Run prevention got teams to the playoffs.  Seven of the top eight teams ranked by ERA made the playoffs.  That same ranking applied for runs allowed, so unearned runs did not impact the playoff teams. • Batting average was not a reliable indicator for playoff teams.  Of the top eight team batting averages, four (Rockies, Pirates, Marlins, and Royals) did not make the post-season. • Speed also did not drive the season outcome.  Washington had the most stolen bases and both the Marlins and the Pirates were in the top eight. So now let’s hear from you: Can the Mets compete for a title without a top power hitter or do they have to spend big to acquire one? Can the Mets turn the tables on “run prevention” by bolstering their pitching with a marquee starter and closer? Does a short season favor pitching rich teams by creating less wear and tear?

Earlier Tuesday, before National League Division Series Game 3, Manaea lost his aunt Mabel. He didn’t have time to grieve. He needed to pitch. And that is precisely what Manaea did, throwing seven of the finest innings of his career in a 7-2 win over the Phillies that pushed the Mets to the cusp of the NL Championship Series." Brian Joura Mets 360: " Pete Alonso gave the Mets the lead with a solo homer in the second inning and Jesse Winker doubled the advantage with a solo homer in the fourth."  Tim Healey Newsday: Sean Manaea's gem, Pete Alonso's homer lift Mets past Phillies in NLDS Game 3. "In the sixth, Manaea began to teeter, issuing walks to Schwarber and Turner to put two on with no outs...But Mendoza stuck with his top starter, and Manaea rewarded him. He struck out Harper on three pitches...Manaea recorded his final six outs on just 13 pitches. Two of them — with two on and one out in the sixth — came on Nick Castellanos’ line drive to Iglesias for a double play." NY Post: Mets come up with three big two-out hits in key Game 3 victory. "Starling Marte, Jose Iglesias and Francisco Lindor, who drove in the final five runs Tuesday, all connected on hits with two outs — with those once-insurance runs morphing into the difference-making ones after the Phillies ended the shutout bid with two in the eighth." NY Post: Mets’ sparkling defensive gems outshine Phillies’ flops in NLDS Game 3. "With one out in the fourth, Alec Bohm smacked a drive that one-hopped the wall in right-center...It hit the warning track, then the wall and then Taylor’s hand, wheeling and making a throw that bounced once before reaching Lindor at second base. Lindor waited for the ball to reach him, the throw hopping over a sliding Bohm and Lindor catching it with his glove attached to Bohm’s helmet for a nifty tag." Tom Brennan: Will NL ROY Winner Be CARSON BENGE? AND OVERTURNED BY THE NUMBERS
DARRYL STRAWBERRY WON ROOKIE OF THE YEAR WITH 2.6 WAR  So, it seems many folks are conceding NL ROY to Cincy’s Sal Stewart. But why? I certainly am not. I looked at his WAR vs. Carson Benge’s WAR, just before the season ended, on Baseball Reference: Stewart? 1.9 WAR.  Kind of low, I’d say. Gaudy Stewart HR and RBI stats, to be sure, but…just 1.9 WAR. Those who vote consider a player’s WAR quite heavily, I believe.  Sal’s is low. Benge? A much higher 4.2 WAR; probably a frothy 5.0 from late April on. What a last 5 months he’s had!  Compare to Darryl p’s 2.6 WAR and smile for Benge. JJ Wetherholt? He was the early favorite, but he hit a sickly .210 in the second half. His 4.4 WAR is due to his excellent glove work at 2B. WAR defensively is easier to accumulate in the infield than in the “fewer chances” outfield. Ozzie Smith was fleet afoot, and decent, hitter, who accumulated much of his 77 WAR doing utterly remarkable things with the glove at shortstop. So, JJW wins first half ROY, for sure, but not full year ROY, IMO.  He faded hard. Nolan McLean? He ended up with 3.0 WAR, going 13-10, 3.16 ERA with 194 Ks in 180 innings. His WAR would probably be higher if he got more offensive support and ended up 16-7 instead. In many years, McLean would win, but this is a TOUGH year.  I’d sadly say no.  Kind of like Jerry Koosman (6.3 WAR) being edged out by Johnny Bench (5.0 WAR) in 1968.  Kooz, man…Kooz was the victim of a crime, I tell ya. AJ Ewing? He is an afterthought here, but in other years, he’d be ROY. Why? He has a remarkable 3.1 WAR in just 3/4 of a season’s worth of games. Compare also to Darryl’s 2.6. Zac Thornton? He deserves big kudos with his 1.7 WAR in essentially half a season. Wow. Lastly, Nate Lavender? The lefty pen ace with a 0.9 WAR in just 21 relief outings? Amazing. So, the 5 named Mets rookies combined for roughly 3.5 season-equivalents. And combined compiled 12.9 WAR in those 3.5 seasons’ worth of play. That averages out to a robust 3.7 WAR per “FTE season”, tremendous, yes? 2026? The best ever year for Mets rookie performance, IMO, and THAT saved the Mets 2026 season from absolute calamity.  The future is SO BRIGHT with these 5. My choice for Mets’ team MVP?   THE ROOKIES. Soto in an injury-damaged 2026 had 3.2 WAR, just as a comparison. ROOKIES ROCK IN METSVILLE.  SO GOOD! NOT MISSED Luisangel Acuna with the 2026 White Sox after dealt away for achy Luis Robert?  A substandard .229/.261.276. He stole 18 bases…but I do not want a utility guy who puts up a slash line like that on the NY Mets. Glad they traded him.  “OVERTURNED UPON APPEAL” We hear that term often these days…a lower court makes a nutty ruling…overturned by higher courts. In baseball?  I read this on Facebook:“MLB Balls & Strikes Calls Overturned: 2000-2025: 0 2026: 5,686 “Twenty-six years of zero overturned calls.  “Then the pitch challenge system arrived, and umpires are getting exposed in ways the sport has never seen.“The uncomfortable truth? Those mistakes didn't start in 2026. They've been happening for decades with zero accountability. The challenge system didn't create bad umpiring. It just made it visible for the first time.“Some umpires are holding up under the scrutiny. Others? The data has been brutal. Patterns are emerging. Names are being attached to numbers. And for the first time in baseball history, the quality of umpiring is being measured in real time.“5,686 wrong calls. Overturned. One season. A lot to fix in the umpire side.   “Baseball is a game of inches.  “In 2026, those inches are finally being called correctly”. Back to me:  This excepted above blurb, of course, still significantly understates the errors in calling balls and strikes. Why?  Because, if every single pitch of the season was called by the machines, the number of wrong ump calls might quadruple.  The 5,686 overturned calls were after a player appealed a given pitch.  Many questionable call pitches that are not formally challenged may be called incorrectly, but are not challenged due to appeal-per-game limits. Wouldn’t you like to see the real error number, both those verified in-game following appeal, AND all of the other errors not overturned due to non-appeal?  I sure would. The cameras are there and record every pitch. So, the data s/b extractable.  Would Tom Glavine be in the Hall of Fame if every pitch he ever threw in the big leagues was called by an error-free camera? I doubt it. That guy lived his whole career getting (way) outside balls called strikes.

Reese Kaplan -- Don't Let Emotions Overrule Rational Decisions
Sometimes it becomes very easy to get caught up in the emotions of performance issues to become irrationally positive or spitefully negative without looking more closely at all of the numbers, the alternatives in-house and the available free agents who could be brought on for money alone without sacrificing player personnel in trades. One good example would be infielder/DH Mark Vientos who is out of options and never quite fulfilled his potential based upon his hot rookie campaign.  With no ability to send him to the minors anymore most folks simply want him gone for the proverbial bag of balls at best or DFA’d just to get the roster spot made available since he’d not demonstrated a fit anymore.  While you could make the case for him remaining on the roster, this projected outcome is readily understandable.  Where it goes awry is when the same ice cold wrath is directed at another young Mets player by the name of Francisco Alvarez.  Between his defensive inconsistencies, his large number of injuries and his ice cold end of year offensive performance you hear the same sentiments being bandied about regarding the 25 year old backstop.   People do realize that at his age and with his long ball power he would command a return in trade so the DFA him noise thankfully has not been heard, but there are a number of issues that need to be considered before this emotional and potentially hasty banishment from Citi Field becomes a reality.  First, let’s look at what the husky guy can do with his bat.   We will not focus on any single year nor any single stat given how much time he’s missed on the IL with a variety of ailments.   Bear in mind he’s proven to be a resilient healer, this year again returning to play ahead of the projected amount of time expected for recovery.  No catcher should be expected to play every single day like an infielder or outfielder might do.  Still, on a 162 game average he would deliver 25 HRs and 72 RBIs while hitting .231.  While the batting average is certainly not impressive, the run production metrics suggest he is certainly in the upper tier across all catchers in professional baseball.   The other red flag in his offensive game is strikeouts.  Over that same span he would be whiffed 156 times.  That’s not a good number but it’s not in the class of sluggers who sometimes eclipse the embarrassing 200K numbers. So if the offensive game is being falsely attributed as being not even major league level, what about the defensive side of the game?  Recently someone did an analysis of the numbers between the apparently defensively superior Luis Torrens as compared to the vilified Francisco Alvarez.  Surprisingly the gap was not nearly as big as you would have expected.  There is no question that Torrens is a better glove and arm but offensively he is nearly non-existent.  The other reason the push-him-out-the-door crowd seems to omit is that there is no ready catcher alternative sitting in Syracuse waiting to ascend to the majors.  For awhile former top prospect Kevin Parada looked as if he was finally turning the corner with his bat but his season ending numbers are better but not exactly spectacular.   The batting average was .251 and was accompanied by 6 HRs and 38 RBIs in 311 ABs.  His over .300 hitting in Syracuse certainly caught a few eyes but the man is now still awaiting his rookie call after joining the Mets organization in 2022.  We have all seen Hayden Senger who also provides superior defensive skills but the reason he’s never been more than an emergency call-up due to injury is his inability to generate any offense. Behind them you have interesting candidate Chris Suero who provides surprising base running speed for a catcher (who can also play elsewhere on the field), but his offensive game is also very much a work in progress.  In 2025 he caught attention with 16 HRs, 68 RBIs and 35 SBs while hitting a modest .233 combined.  In 2026 he HRs and SBs increased but the batting average dipped to just .201.  Keep an eye on him but don’t pencil him into the 2027 Mets as he has not yet even reached AAA. In free agency the top name is former Met Travis d’Arnaud who hit .158 at age 38.  Another former Met, James McCann is also available.  No one else on the list is a starting caliber player either.  So if you hastily bid adios to Alvarez understand that you’re either accepting the career .228 hitting Luis Torrens to bat 9th or you’re going to have to engineer a trade for a better player using up resources who might be better used to fortify the rotation or the pen or the bench.  Keep the inexpensive Alvarez around and hope he has a healthy 2027 season.  He’s surely better than the ready alternatives.

Steve Sica - Mets Prospects: Extremely Small AFL Sample Size
The Arizona Fall League got underway on Saturday the 3rd. All eight of the Mets' prospects have seen action over the first two games. There's still a month left to go in the ultra-young season, but let's take a quick look at how it's going so far. Hitters: 1B/3B Cole Mathis:  Coming in at number 13 on Pipeline's Met top-30 list, he's the highest-ranked prospect for the Mets in the AFL. He was the Opening Day starting first baseman for the Surprise Saguaros. He went 1-for-4, with an RBI single in the seventh inning. Part of the Surprises' 9-3 win over Scottsdale. 2B Bruin Agbayani:  At 19 years old, he's the youngest prospect the Mets have sent to the desert. He was given the start at second base on Opening Day. He had a rough day in the field, making two errors. At the plate, he went 0-for-4, with a walk and a run scored. INF Boston Baro: Baro didn't play on Opening Day, but he was in the lineup as the starting third baseman in Surprises' home opener the next night. He went 1-for-3, with an opposite-field RBI single. He was taken out of the game after five innings. A curious decision, and one can hope it was just to give him some rest and not injury-related. Baro was saddled with spending most of his 2026 MiLB season on the IL. Pitchers: Calvin Ziegler:  Ziegler came on in relief in the second game of the season for Surprise. He was very efficient, getting three outs on just eight pitches, with five of them for strikes. Peyton Prescott: The Mets' 5th-round draft pick a year ago was given the Opening Day start for Surprise. He worked an inning and a third, giving up no runs on two hits, two walks, and one strikeout. He threw 37 pitches, with 20 of them for strikes as he danced in and out of danger. Irving Cota: Cota also pitched on Opening Day and put together the longest outing of any of the seven Surprise pitchers in this game. He went two and two-thirds innings, allowing two runs on one hit and two walks, while striking out one. Brendan Girton: Girton came in after Cota and only pitched to three batters. He walked his first batter, gave up a hit to the next one, but was able to get Bryce Rainer to fly out for the third and final out of the inning, keeping Scottsdale off the scoreboard. Ryan Lambert: Lambert closed out Surprises' 9-3 victory on Saturday with a scoreless ninth inning. He allowed no hits and one walk, while striking out two. He threw 18 pitches, with 10 of them for strikes.

Cautious Optimist -- Restoring the Competitive Balance Between Pitchers and Hitters and Making Baseball more enjoyable as well
With the agenda of the upcoming CBA lengthening by the day, I'd thought I'd get ready for my coverage of it, by adding a potential rule change that everyone should agree to, though no one will My goal is simple and fair and unimpeachable.  Right now, pitchers have an unfair advantage over hitters.  Not only is it unfair; it is killing the game. I urge negotiators on both sides to recognize the injustice and the damage it has wrought, and to take a small win while they can by adopting my suggesting and making baseball fun again. I mean not as much fun as the Banana Guys, but more fun than a barrel of monkeys. Hear me out, then feel free to ignore me. Too many pitchers? Not enough hitters? Half of every major league team's roster is set aside to pitchers.  Half of the team's spots are set aside for players that play the same position.  There are lots of reasons behind this distribution of resources.  The obvious one is that everyday position players, in general, and in the absence of injuries and an occasionally needed day off, are physically capable of playing every day.  Most are even capable of playing both ends of a double header.   Not so pitchers, especially starters. Most teams adopt the 100 pitch guideline or some variant of it: to wit, a starter shouldn't be expected to go through the line-up more than twice; or not pitcher shall be asked to go beyong 5 or 6 innings.  An especially poor performance may send a starter packing sooner, and only a truly stellar or unusually efficient one may keep him around longer, but for the most part the days of pitchers tossing complete games are only a memory. Whether a starter meets the baseline performance to warrant invoking the 100 pitch rule or not, he's not expected to pitch again for the better part of a week's time. Relievers are by and large able to pitch more often than that, but only because they pitch an inning or so at most.  Those who are asked to pitch 2, let alone 3 innings during one outing, are put on ice (often literally) for several days before they are called upon again. Healthy Yes, but the Collateral Consequences Create An Imbalance We should distinguish between the 'health' reasons for having so much of the roster taken up by pitchers with what the consequences of doing so have been on the game itself, in particular on batting averages, runs scored, and perhaps even the enjoyability of the game. One way to think about the latter is to imagine what the games would be like were teams permitted fewer pitchers on the roster.  Let's say 10 in total.   We have to look at this potential rule change from both the perspective of pitcher workload and its distribution on the one hand, and the likely impact it would have on hitters and their performance on the other. Pitchers would be asked to go deeper in games, pitch more often than they currently do, and this would be true of both starters and relievers. It is reasonable to assume that at the outset of this experiment, pitchers would be less effective overall, and for several reasons, not the least of which would be that they would back off from the current 'full effort' on every pitch approach that dominates the sport now, and which, arguably, is responsible for so many arm injuries among pitchers.   Pitching would become more of an art than it is now and pitchers would be more strategic, likely throw more strikes, do less nibbling on the corners and focus more than they do now on inducing soft contact. Pitchers would also be evaluated differently than they are now and this would likely be reflected in how they are compensated.  Strikeouts would be less valuable than they are now, and even if ERAs were to rise, length would be more important than it is now. This would presumably be true throughout the league and no team in particular would be disadvantaged by the rule. More balls would theoretically be put in play.  It would behoove a team to put as good a defense on the field as possible, and outfielders who could cover a lot of ground would command premium pay. The hitters would be the obvious beneficiaries.  First of all there would be more of them on a roster.  With only 10 pitchers per team that would leave spots for 16 position players.  This would allow managers to make more strategic pinch hitting decisions, and roster architecture would change as well as there would be room for more 'one offensive tool' players.  These guys would be like closers, or situational relievers.  There would be a few occasions when their skills would be needed; otherwise there would be no reason to call upon them. This new level of specialization would lead to less well rounded ball players overall. Baseball game scores could approach your average lower scoring college football game.  There could be more action as well as more runs, but would the game be better for it? I don't know.  It would be different, that's for sure. Two things come to mind when I play out this experiment and other variations of it. The first is that there is something special about the game that is a collateral consequence of the distribution of resources between pitchers and hitters that baseball currently implements.  And that is the remarkable experience of seeing hitters and pitchers facing one another when each is most able to perform at his greatest ability.  That is the nature of the competition we are treated to most of the time.  If it is less often than we would like it is largely because the season is too long. On the other hand, I have to confess that while I love the idea of both hitters and pitchers facing off at their respective best, the game that emerges from their doing so is somewhat less exciting on a day to day basis than I wish it were.   Don't get me wrong.  I love it this way, especially during the playoffs as every face off between a pitcher and a hitter is a real test of the mettle of each.  The Rays 1-0 win over the Yankees having held the Bronx Bombers to one hit was just outstanding baseball -- on both sides, by both teams. But I wouldn't enjoy watching a 100 games a year that followed the same script, let alone 162 games that did so. The fact is that the current distribution of position players and pitchers gives the team with the better pitching staff a non-trivial advantage: one that would be even larger than it is were relievers no longer required to face three batters. So I'd invite you to think about how the game could be changed to keep its most compelling feature of ongoing  face to face - mano a mano-- battles, while reducing the extent to which the odds favor the pitching staff as much as they do now. Let me throw out the change I would like to see. Like most of my nascent ideas, this one is currenly only half baked.  With that qualification in place, here's my suggestion -- which I believe is directionally correct, if not the best ultimate solution to what I take to be a genuine problem with the National Pasttme:  the unfair advantage pitchers have. I propose that the roster distribution remain in place.  However, prior to every game, the manager designates three players, either starting or on the bench who can be allowed to hit for another player in the lineup one additional time.  For example, Andy Greene might designate Soto, Benge and Lindor.  Each would bat at their normal spot in the lineup, but Greene could put either of them up at a crucial time in the game instead of the batter due up -- according to the lineup card.   Green could use each player only once in this capacity.  In effect the top third of the team's hitters or some similarly talented group of players could bat one more time.  This gives the manager an opportunity to match up his best players against an army of relievers each giving it all for only one inning and maybe evening things out just a little. There are of course technical issues that would need to be worked out, but nothing that could not be with a little imagination and time. Effectively this increases the bench and does so with the best talent the team has to offer.  I can also imagine strategic decisions being made that are offset or nullified by strategic responses.  A team holding out an Aaron Judge's extra at bat until the 9th inning if needed can be outmaneuved by a manager's decision to walk him at that time or bring in a righty or the like. I think the best part of baseball is the one on one challenge, but as it is currently configured the rosters give pitchers an edge and that can be addressed by giving the offense a chance to use its three best players one more time each to match the maximum effort relievers brought into the game. I know it's sacrilege but I like it, like it, yes I do. What's not to like.?
