Accidentally created another universe in the lab, whoops 😅 Thankfully, as you can see from the scale bar, it's very tiny atm, so I can probably let things run for a bit before I have to get in there and make sure they don't invent capitalism, nuclear bombs, or crocs 😅 #algae #microbiology #universe

Note to self: don't use PNG compression when turning a stack of #microdroplet images into a video, unless listening to early Pink Floyd in a darkened room 😅🥴 #microfluidics #microscopy #algae #microbiology

My #algae and #bacteria consortia sometimes decides it wants to go incognito and makes pretend moss 🥸🦠 #science #microbiology

The #algae have followed me home apparently! (I don't need another lab culture, I don't need another lab culture, I don't need another lab culture 😅)

If anyone wants to see a practice recorded version of last night's @pintofscience.uk talk, it's on the lab website 😊

Sheffield folk, if you'd like to hear me nerd out about all the amazing things #microbes do around us, I'm doing a Pint of Science talk on Monday. Tickets in the link. Would be lovely to see familiar faces 😊 pintofscience.co.uk/event/hidden...

Yes, technically I could avoid putting terrible jokes in my @pintofscience.uk talk in May, but it's my talk, and it's going in, and so there. 😅 #microbiology #scicomm #metal #heavymetal

Bacteria covalently incorporate polyfluoroalkyl carboxylates into membrane lipids
Nature Microbiology, Published online: 27 March 2026; doi:10.1038/s41564-026-02301-xBacteria are able to covalently incorporate n:3 polyfluoroalkyl carboxylates into phosphatidylethanolamine and phosphatidylglycerol, two major components of bacterial lipid bilayers.

I have included multiple PhD candidates from Cameroon in research project budgets over the last year, because they qualify and are exceptional in their field. Are we just supposed to tell them that they're no longer able to study here because Labour turned the racism dial up another notch?

“All evolutionary biologists know that variation itself is life’s only irreducible essence”—Gould Evolutionary biology is the study of how complicated and diverse life can be; the field has its jerks, but a good evolutionary biologist learns pretty fast that life doesn’t like boundaries or binaries

Fun! A Pseudomonas strain growing on minimal algae media with no carbon source. Possibly fixing CO2 as a carbon source & using Fe reduction or Mn oxidation for energy 🦠 (...or chomping agar as it's carbon/energy source 🙈 Shhh, don't spoil my fun before Christmas 😅 Will check next year) #Microbiology

Faffing with some #lichen (green, powdery, Lepraria maybe 🤷‍♂️) under the confocal. The #algae light up like Christmas trees from their chlorophyll autofluorescence; the rest of the dark structure visible in the brightfield overlay is presumably the #fungi component 🍄 #science #microscopy #microbiology

Chlorophyll autofluorescence in green algae from when I was fiddling with microscopy settings the other week. Being fairly new to algae, I'm still marvelling at how handy it is that they have natural fluorescence and don't need staining just to see them! 👀 #algae #microscopy #science #microbiology
