No — millions have been wrong before. That's ad populum, the bandwagon. (It's also, separately, how the Iraq WMD story spread. Different flaw, same event.

No one has proven that extraterrestrials DON'T exist — therefore they must exist. Scientists haven't proven this treatment works — therefore it's completely ineffective. Both of those feel like reasoning. Neither one is. And once you can see the move underneath them, you will not be able to stop

A leap. A slippery slope asserts the worst ending without showing how you'd get there. The chain is claimed, not proven.

The fast answer is librarian. The reasoned answer is farmer — there are far more of them. Steve just FITS the stereotype, so we ignore the odds. That's representativeness.

The Halo Effect: The Mental Shortcut You Never Notice
YouTube video by Critical Thinking Literacy Channel

Dr. John Balla · System 2 Insider @johndavidballa.bsky.social · 13/07/2026
Fight it: (1) Separate the traits — attractive ≠ competent. (2) Hunt the disconfirming fact: "what would make me wrong?" (3) Blind the decision — curtains at orchestra auditions raised the share of women hired. (4) Slow the high-stakes calls.
100
Dr. John Balla · System 2 Insider @johndavidballa.bsky.social · 13/07/2026
The trap: the halo doesn't feel like a bias. It feels like insight — like you're a good judge of character. That feeling is what makes it so hard to catch.
100
Dr. John Balla · System 2 Insider @johndavidballa.bsky.social · 13/07/2026
Why can't we just stop? The halo lives in System 1, which doesn't ask permission. By the time slow System 2 shows up — if it does — the impression's formed. And System 2 is lazy; it won't audit the halo unless you train it.
100
Dr. John Balla · System 2 Insider @johndavidballa.bsky.social · 13/07/2026
It has an evil twin: the Horn Effect. One negative trait — an awkward manner — and we let that darkness spread. We punish people for traits that say nothing about their competence or character. Same bias, different mask.
100
Dr. John Balla · System 2 Insider @johndavidballa.bsky.social · 13/07/2026
It runs your daily life. Juries judge attractive defendants more leniently. A deep, steady voice reads as competence. Apple's sleek design signals quality. A charismatic candidate gets credit for honesty. We vote for the halo and call it judgment.
100
Dr. John Balla · System 2 Insider @johndavidballa.bsky.social · 13/07/2026
The key: it isn't a conscious choice. It's System 1 — fast, automatic, effortless — building a story from almost no information. The halo feels like an observation. It's actually a shortcut.
100
Dr. John Balla · System 2 Insider @johndavidballa.bsky.social · 13/07/2026
The term goes back to psychologist Edward Thorndike, 1920. Officers who saw a soldier as physically impressive also rated him more intelligent, loyal, and skilled — traits that have nothing to do with physique.
100
Dr. John Balla · System 2 Insider @johndavidballa.bsky.social · 13/07/2026
Why care? It's not a harmless quirk. It's a lever, and other people know how to pull it. Master it and you stop overpaying for pretty packaging, stop trusting a confident voice that hasn't earned it, and judge the argument instead of the suit wearing it.
100
Dr. John Balla · System 2 Insider @johndavidballa.bsky.social · 13/07/2026
You didn't reason your way there. One visible trait — attractive, well-spoken, sharply dressed — quietly spreads, like a virus, across every trait you can neither see nor assess. Once you see how it works, you catch it everywhere.
100
Dr. John Balla · System 2 Insider @johndavidballa.bsky.social · 13/07/2026
You've never met this person. You know nothing about them. Yet your brain already decided they're intelligent, trustworthy, and good at their job. You took one trait and let it spread across everything you can't see. That's the Halo Effect. 🧵 #HaloEffect
