Your argument about AI in general. I’m simply being practical. OSS utilities, small programs, require constant updates for new services, hardware, technical drift. AI is VERY GOOD at finding security loopholes. Like it or not, as long as AI is around, most developers will need to use.

we want the same things. reality is there will be no choice. The same amazing individuals must turn to AI, at minimum for security analysis. It also helps with maintenance and growth of features, as needed. To be clear - I donate to OSS every year.

Rather than doing a (tired) social media dunk, do you want to explain? I’ve been worried about the underlying frailty of open source software for awhile, and the thankless job these amazing individuals do who maintain great OSS projects.

If the adobe clone works out, and early reports are promising - ideally HUGE opportunity to have AI- with strong guardrails- make this so much easier for stability, resilience and security. And it will be needed, considering g the power of L hacking

The concern is the normalization of corruption, the sheer demonstration of power no consequences. Trump and his cronies can make these corrupt, sweetheart deals, disobey the law - no consequences. But they get to use the law to manufacture guilt and fake consequences. Ethically bankrupt.

Josh, I have spent hudreds of hours reading or contemplating awesome things written by the TPM team. And yes, I am a happy and willing subscriber and have been for years. You have simply stated the obvious about economics. From my perspective, I’m happy to pay to subscribe, even thankful!

Sad to see the show go. You did a great job for the niche! I say that as someone who has watched Tom pick and choose stats to slander my favorite player for years. 😀 doing a good job when a listener half the time has an axe to grind, but listens anyway. 🤣 Thank you for hours of great listening

The authoritative book that describes exactly why corruption of the highest order became “it’s okay if you are Trump”. Some very moral friends of mine who are moderate to liberal in their views, will equate “Hilary’s emails/Hunter Biden”,with what Trump is doing. It is maddening.

certain policies that sound good can be unworkable . It is true the CA billionaire tax proposal isn’t well written. What infuriates me is if you say that - then use 80 % of your article on it to show how EFFED UP it is that tax rules penalize W-2 workers. Pass-through, inheritance vs lottery, etc.

his timeline is too optimistic on what AI will do, when. Success in programming and language is not success in the “real world”- which is “spiky” in difficulty for AI. But - I’m not in the best labs. And “self-improvement” - models training models - is a WILD VARIABLE. May well be hyper exponential!

Very important! I submitted this question to Gemini. Any “solution” has be multi-layered. While this list of Gemini’s looks cogent to me, not my specialty. Still: de-financing public life, broad based coalitions, and militant democracy missing in the U.S. gemini.google.com/share/68a83d...

Flock. an “idealized use argument” that works. I’m one of those San Francisco users that see petty theft go down because “opportunistic” thieves regularly hanging around tourist areas have reduced. Balanced against misuse by authorities. “Needs of many” vs “isolated harms”? Use nuanced analysis.

There pretty much is never good “progress” that happens in comments. A shame, since - in theory - the good knowledgeable comments can add context, flavor, more info. But you end up wading throug mostly unproductive stuff

When authoritarian regimes try to suppress/manipulate ballots, effective pushback combines data & mass mobilization: • Parallel vote counts (NAMFREL, Philippines '86; Chile '88) • Auditing paper/digital trails to force court reruns (Kenya '17; Ukraine '04) • Massive turnout to outpace fraud margins

deck is stacked. Must be strategic coordination between diffeeent camps. 1. Rich to large degree have bought media. 2. Across all media rage bait favors right wing populism. 3. Parallel info realities. 4. False equivalence. Centrists/liberals left must be tactical/coordinated. Near impossible.

Deportees Sent to Liberia Recount Harrowing Details of U.S. Expulsion and Treatment by ICE
Ten deportees said they experienced or witnessed what they called abusive or violent treatment by ICE. They spent months in detention, they said, before being sent to nations where they had no ties.

You can’t criticize him for those series. Warriors would have won again if hadn’t lost Durant and Thompson. Lakers - #1 defense in bubble, won the title, Russ hurt. Harden’s play? OUTSTANDING. Counter: even average, he hasn’t played as well in playoff as regular season. True - but don’t play bad.

For the past playoff. 1. Basketball team game, can’t blame a single player for losing. Harden hasn’t lost a series oddmakers expected Houston to win. 2. Law of averages and cherry-picking. Don’t ignore the GREAT playoff games based on one bad one. Average it out. 3. Look at JH 2019 and 2020.

1. Given his age, in the last few years, what was is your expectation? He is 3rd highest player on team. 58th highest salary in league. Regular season - IF he plays as well as he did last year, this year salary is worth it. 3rd year of deal? That will be a problem. Cavs are paying for “win now”

As a Harden guy, I’m happy he is on track in this year to get to 30K points, 9K assists, 7K rebounds. He may get to 30K points 10 assists. That’s The two James in that rare air? Lebron James and James Harden.

“a major theme of Red Star’s politicking is attacking AOC as a capitalist running dog who has exploited DSA for careerist ambitions.”. LOL. Far enough to the left to attack AOC in those terms, you and your 3 friends need to join the People’s Front of Judea. (Ref: Monty Python) Splitter!!

The slop point? true. also producing revolutions in higher math, REAL dangers and benefits in genes/virus studies. I would say SLOW DOWN! we don’t want COVID 2.0 - end of civilization. But China is already running LLMs near level. How do you stop them? Powerful tech, can be used for good and bad.

The water point is no longer true. . New technology is reducing water use Modern hyperscale operators increasingly deploy: * closed-loop liquid cooling * hybrid cooling * dry cooling * free-air cooling * reclaimed or recycled water The claim is less than a golf course, but I need to see studies

China - true over last 20 years - will use state capacity to forge ahead, use dominance as cudgel. Ideally, we could do similar. would require a national sense of shared purpose, sacrifice by the “tech titans” which won’t happen. people will pursue narrow interests.

Everything written on AI economics, leadership, and economic capture are true. What is left unsaid, is the risk of slowing down AI, ceding the progress to China - who already have both Kimi and Qwen as near-frontier models. Just as in rare earth metals, a priority national security issue.

Cost of education + %student debt/earnings + default rate.. Yes, worse for humanities. Main problem is COST of college I know people who have serviced their debt loan for 20 years. It’s crazy and I hate it. Financially shackled from 20-35.

Well written!. To further you point - the current leaders have been there forever, and have prospered on this “balancing act” of the different members of the coalition. That means the old leadership is not up to this moment. So new leaders from ONE MEMBER of coalition, stepping up with their priors.
