Muffled voices carrying faintly from the farthest bank Clouds slowly swallow the horizon till only the ghost of a tower block remains A slow fall of rain freckling the back of my hand from Summer Notebook, Nov '21

Well, some fun along the way, but state censorship and threats of being sent to Siberia for writing something atonal is never going to be a barrel of laughs! But there are jokes & lightness in the playing. Plus, you do get to hear snatches of the Leningrad symphony - Shostakovich at his best?

Just finished this Joanne Meschery novel - my first 'first' read, as opposed to re-read, in quite a while and I liked it very much. Small town America, prejudices & girls' sports against the background of the Iraq war. Good characterisation; fine, unfussy writing.

Email message from a friend, citing Dave Brubeck, reminded me of this nice little Eastwood doc (one of 7 produced by Scorsese) on which Brubeck plays some surprisingly (?) good blues. As does Clint!

Sad days in Sherwood Forest! The Major Oak pronounced “lifeless & leafless” after 1000 years, but to be “left standing as deadwood to help other wildlife on the reserve.” One might wish to be similarly useful when one’s last leaf has fallen.
