John Austin @johnaustin.bsky.social · 12/07/2025Every time I go to check out what the front-end world is up to. 140
John Austin @johnaustin.bsky.social · 01/07/2025More tests blending painted environments with physical lighting: 020
John Austin @johnaustin.bsky.social · 01/07/2025I've been playing using realtime bounced lighting combined with the painted photoshop decals. This way dynamic objects can pick up some of the lighting that Anita paints in photoshop. Curious what people think. It's cool, but not yet sure if it's the right effect. 🤔 000
John Austin @johnaustin.bsky.social · 24/06/2025Back to working on wheat physics! This actually uses Unity's hair package 😅 So we're covering the game essentially in a giant head of hair. Very normal. 170
John Austin @johnaustin.bsky.social · 20/06/2025Starting to get some paint layers into the game! This uses some custom tech I've been working on to let artists paint directly on the scene. 080
John Austin @johnaustin.bsky.social · 18/06/2025Some experiments for our recipe codex for The Infernal Parade. 👀 130
John Austin @johnaustin.bsky.social · 20/05/2025I mean, I knew Rust was fast, but wow does it eat server workloads for breakfast. And only using .01Gb of RAM! What in the world. 020
John Austin @johnaustin.bsky.social · 07/04/2025I spent hundreds of hours learning to draw so I could make pictures like this 170
John Austin @johnaustin.bsky.social · 18/01/2025Got auto-generated navmeshes working for different rooms! 010
John Austin @johnaustin.bsky.social · 17/01/2025Lattice now has the ability to collapse simple nodes into a minimized form that snaps onto the parent node. This is shockingly nice! It makes working with complex scripts much more pleasant, because long chains of casts can be hidden out of the way! 010
John Austin @johnaustin.bsky.social · 07/01/2025Some news! We've recently been working on a new project called The Infernal Parade. It's a bit of a spiritual successor to Clockwinder, but for consoles/pc! Build factories out of your own clones to cook food for an endless parade of horrors. 1225
John Austin @johnaustin.bsky.social · 27/12/2024An initial start on automatic parallelization for Lattice! The color here shows the work unit each node has been assigned to. These will all get split across cores. 010
John Austin @johnaustin.bsky.social · 09/12/2024I dueted with a man who claims to be 75 but doesn't look a day above 50. He sounded like a Japanese Frank Sinatra! 020
John Austin @johnaustin.bsky.social · 09/12/2024Ended the night singing jazz in a little bar in Shibuya? Japan continues to deliver. 130
John Austin @johnaustin.bsky.social · 20/11/2024Since the last one went over so well, here's another concept that just came in for the new game project! Spooky warmth. I'll be posting more about this project than some of previous in development stuff! Credit: Glenn Hernandez 061
John Austin @johnaustin.bsky.social · 17/11/2024Look at these concept images that just came in for the new project!!! It makes me so excited ahhhhhh. This is going to be so good. 😱 Credit: Glenn Hernandez 4291
John Austin @johnaustin.bsky.social · 06/11/2024The most damning chart of today is the fact that The Bronx, one of the most liberal boroughs in NYC, voted +12 points Republican compared to the last election. (28% in 2024 vs 15% in 2020). This was not just a turnout problem in the swing states. The democrats are losing real working class votes. 😕 011
John Austin @johnaustin.bsky.social · 21/10/2024My girlfriend wrote a Google Research blog post! She's developed an ML model that understands medical CT scans! And it's built for the public! Anyone can now train a local model on their own PC that can understand chest CT scans! Wild!! research.google/blog/taking-... 2100
John Austin @johnaustin.bsky.social · 29/08/2024Can't show screenshots of the project I'm working on, but probably fine to just show the depth map right? 050
John Austin @johnaustin.bsky.social · 24/04/2024Did you know that you can emit a C# function with 700 local variables? #gamedev 020
John Austin @johnaustin.bsky.social · 14/04/2024Good article on how Apple encodes their VR 180 degree video. They encode it into the frame at a 45 degree rotation to take advantage of the diagonal being the longest dimension! blog.mikeswanson.com/post/7477618... 100
John Austin @johnaustin.bsky.social · 15/03/2024Searched for "Golden retriever petting another golden retriever". A+. 020
John Austin @johnaustin.bsky.social · 10/03/2024Oh wow, this totally worked with very minor tweaks: 010
John Austin @johnaustin.bsky.social · 10/03/2024I've been playing with Gemini 1.5 (with the 1million token window). It's wild to be able to give it your entire codebase, and have it suggest changes: 230
John Austin @johnaustin.bsky.social · 16/10/2023Photobucket tried to delete all my photos, but on the upside I found screenshots from an unfinished TF2 map I worked on back when I was.. 15? Still have fond memories for this map! 130
