Illinois law says local officials can't help federal agents deport people. So how did so many residents end up on ICE's radar through information shared by local police, sheriffs, and prosecutors? I filed 394 FOIA requests to find out. (An @injusticewatch.org partnership with @theintercept.com!)

Illinois promised to protect immigrants. Local officials helped deport them anyway.
In over a third of Illinois counties, cops, sheriffs, and even prosecutors helped federal immigration agents route at least 150 people into the deportation system since Trump returned to office, despi...

May 31, 2005: As Sen. Don Harmon presented the BIMP, Sen. Dave Sullivan criticized sweeping several funds, saying he wished his children were Democrats so they'd sweep his kitchen as thoroughly as the funds. Sen. Harmon replied that if the Sullivan children weren't Democrats, they'd work on them.

SENATOR D. SULLIVAN:
Let's just assume a it's been about half hour that this motion has been over in the Senate. It's about eight o'clock at night. Most people aren't paying attention to what we're doing here, but we're trying to pay attention. You mentioned that this is a hundred-and-fifty-six-million-dollar we'll call it sweep, you can call it whatever you want. That, I think, is about five million dollars a minute that we're sweeping right out of here. It almost makes me wish that my children were Democrats so they could learn to sweep the kitchen floor as well as you are sweeping funds right out of here.
SENATOR HARMON:
Senator Sullivan, I think your children are Democrats and if they're not, we'll work on them.

May 26, 1978: A joint session convened for an address by President Jimmy Carter, who dispensed with his prepared remarks and spoke on a few issues foreign and domestic before taking questions from members of the General Assembly on labor law, inflation, the US-Israel relationship, and urban renewal.

President Carter:
This morning I I had prepared a speech text, which has been distributed, or will be, to you. I prepared it myself and I think perhaps you might want to read it over. But I thought, in order to have a more constructive Session for me, that I would make a very few impromptu remarks and then spend what time we have together answering your questions. And just to be sure we are completely fair, I'll ask the Speaker to recognize you for questions a little bit later on. I've been a Member of a State Legislature, my first elective office was to the Georgia State Senate, where I served two terms. And I came to realize then the extreme importance of state government, the difficulties of public service, the courage required to make decisions on controversial issues; because almost every issue that comes here is difficult to resolve. If a matter is easy it's solved in a family's home, or perhaps in a neighborhood, or city hall, or county courthouse. If it's much more difficult, it comes to your desk and eventually comes to the attention of the Congress of the United States and the President.

I go to more fundraisers than most people but tbh I'd go to more if they were at random VFWs instead of Hubbard or Kinzie.
A spokesman for Saviano, who served for years as a Republican state legislator, said the tab covered a gathering involving government officials.

The spokesman called Saviano “a very prolific and successful fundraiser” for various political figures and causes, and that means “we have to have places that are very nice to attract people to come to give at these” events.

“A lot of these people aren’t going to come if it’s hotdogs and popcorn at the VFW,” he said.
