www.gofundme.com/f/help-nora-... One last pitch, and push! We are enormously grateful to the friends who have got my daughter Nora Stone-Roig this far. She hasn't quite met her goal. But she's fairly close. If she got 24 one-euro donations in 24 hours she'd be at 16k, which sounds lovely, eh!

I am chipping away at my project of writing to everyone I've met since about the age of four--the next batch will be high school teachers--in an effort to get my daughter to Cambridge. I've learnt that the people I sensed were unambiguously good people, whatever their politics, are just that.

For the record: in a scholarly world that very nearly ignores the past, Nora wants to work on the past. Her period runs from the 17th to the early 19th century. Her work isn't modish. It's solid.

Is she my daughter? Yes! Can I afford to send her to Cambridge? No. I can do my part, but that's not enough. Since the age of 16, Nora's schooling has been international--though entirely via scholarships. That disqualifies her from most Spanish funding (she's Spanish). gofund.me/c47916a6f

In 2014 I published an article on (among other things) the library of John Hunter, a Scottish merchant and consul in C18 Spain. Part of his library made its way to the library at the @RealAcademiaES, where his 1787 Burns *Poems* has since been digitised: www.rae.es/archivo-digi...

Choose 20 paintings that have stayed with you or influenced you — one painting a day (or thereabouts) for 20 days, no particular order. No explanations, no reviews, just paintings. 2. Hugo Simberg, "The Wounded Angel." Oil on canvas, 1903. Helsinki Ateneum.
A bare, wintery landscape with a lake in the background. In the foreground two boys carrying a stretcher on which the wounded angel of the title sits, blindfolded, her head bowed, wilting white flowers in her right hand, her robe trailing on the ground. On the left the boy seen in profile carrying the front of the stretcher is all in black. On the right, the second boy carrying the stretcher's back looks out at the viewer with a suspicious expression.

Mysteriously--for an open call of international scope--the documents for applicants are almost entirely exclusively in Catalan. Still: trust the Force, and Google Translate, and give it a go. My own department has only one member of teaching staff specialised in anything pre-1830s. We need more.

It tilts heavily towards the present; and the older periods are spotted, in their panels, with talks relating something very old to something very new (neo-Victorian fiction, new productions of C16 plays). aedeangasteiz.com/programme/ #disciplinarity #C18

(AEDEAN is the national English Studies association.) Perhaps fewer than 10% of the literature talks are on pre-1600 topics, about 15% on the 19th century, and 75% on everything after 1900.

In a moany-groany sort of voice, #becauseHalloween: My specialty is nearly dead in Spanish academe, according to anecdotal if reliable data. In the annual #AEDEAN conference, the number of panel talks on the #eighteenthcentury has, apparently (I could squint a bit longer), dropped to zero.

Thinking on this Women's Day about my English grandmother, Winnie Howes, who, in 1917, attained a new freedom by enlisting in the Women's Auxiliary Army Corps. Thinking, too, about the story that, appalled by their lack of femininity, other women spat on the Corps when they saw them in the streets.
Poster for the WAAC, showing a woman in uniform comprising a belted grey dress and wide brimmed grey hat. It reads "Women Urgently wanted for the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps/ Work at Home and Abroad with the Forces/ Cooks, Clerks, Waitresses, Driver-Mechanics, All Kinds of Domestic Workers and Women in Many other capacities to take the place of men" photo of my grandmother around the time of her wedding, in 1920 or so; her dark hair pulled back, with kiss curls on either side of her face; she is wearing a white blouse trimmed with crochet lace on the sleeves.

Catalan history for IWD! Founded in 1909 by Francesca Bonnemaison (after whom it is now named), the Biblioteca Popular de la Dona, part of a wider effort to open continuing education to women, was Europe's first women's library. Closed in 1936, it reopened as part of the Espai Bonnemaison in 2004.
