We created gyms because modern day work no
longer required physical activity. Without exercise,
our muscles atrophy.
I predict we'll need gyms for our brains too, once Al

Interesting, what many researchers have joked about for quite a long time (but with a serious tone) has now happened at arXiv, submissions per time has become limited.

#OnThisDay in 1861, Charles Darwin wrote to his friend, "But I am very poorly today and very stupid and hate everybody and everything." 📜🧪
Sepia photograph of Charles Darwin in old age, seated in a chair and shown from the waist up in three-quarter profile facing right, against a plain backdrop. He is bald on top with white hair at the sides, a lined forehead, and a long, full white beard. He wears a dark, heavy overcoat with wide lapels over a waistcoat, his hands resting in his lap at the lower right.A line of Charles Darwin's handwriting in brown ink on cream paper, with faint writing showing through from the other side of the page. It reads: "But I am very poorly today & very stupid & hate everybody & everything."

Princeton finally handed off some advance copies for the 2nd Edition of my wasp book, and they look phenomenal! Thank you everyone for your exceptional patience! Go order it right now!! press.princeton.edu/books/paperb...
A photo of me (a white woman with long brownish hair wearing glasses and a dark blue shirt) holding an advance copy of my book "The Social Wasps of North America, Central America, and the Caribbean: Second Edition" in front of an old wooden railing and some lush sassafras leaves. There is a big illustration of a bald-faced hornet on the cover.

This photo is slightly misleading, since it was taken by my mom a year ago in 2025, immediately before we noticed the major printing errors in the plate series that required us to completely redo the printing from scratch. My joy is nonetheless real, and I feel justified in using this photo since I never posted it the first time around. It's all good now!

Using a simple delta rule (Rescorla-Wagner) tweaked so that the associative strength of the common elements is weighted by its exposure-dependent activation we can simulate our results, showing latent inhibition, and its reversal:

I think this kind of pattern will pop up in most birds-of-prey, falcons, and many owls. There are lots of anecdotes, perhaps more systematic studies will pop up. Thanks!

A benefit of studying urban goshawks, they are used to people making observations possible of this most often shy species. And, here's the abstract: 4/4

Main result is that play in young goshawks follow a developmental curve, kicking in at 45 days of age, peaking around 60 days, and then vanes off after 75 days of age. 2/4

We just published the first study showing that a bird-of-prey goes through an ontogenetic window of exploratory play. Young goshawks look like young cheetahs when tossing pine cones into the air, chasing after them. Just published in Animal Behaviour: www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti... 1/4

This is a good time for UK institutions to start rethinking their genAI use in education. It always is! We must decide what kind of instruction we want our students to receive: one that quickly dumps them into an illusory, ephemeral work sphere, or one that gives them the knowledge they'll need.
