A benefit of studying urban goshawks, they are used to people making observations possible of this most often shy species. And, here's the abstract: 4/4

Data comes from photographs collected during 319 observations days, from 9 years, from seven goshawk territories around Stockholm. Here is one of the young goshawks from the study. 3/4

Main result is that play in young goshawks follow a developmental curve, kicking in at 45 days of age, peaking around 60 days, and then vanes off after 75 days of age. 2/4

We just published the first study showing that a bird-of-prey goes through an ontogenetic window of exploratory play. Young goshawks look like young cheetahs when tossing pine cones into the air, chasing after them. Just published in Animal Behaviour: www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti... 1/4

Chater & Christiansen asked in BBS "How has human culture become so complex?" & answered that social tinkering is a key process. In our reply, we argue that complementary minimal principles can explain how simple mechanisms generate complex cultural organization. doi.org/10.1017/S014...

This must be one of the prettiest places in Colombia, the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta of n Colombia, such a hotspot for endemism. Fortier et al (doi.org/10.3417/2025...) say 164 plants are endemic here (above 1700m) - the largest list of SNSM endemics to date! Photo July 2026. #naturephotography

It's bigger than one paper. Evidential bar should be higher, not lower, methods should match theory. #Popsci transmits these incorrect stories. It's not about the animals, they're always awesome, it's about science & describing how life on Earth works. Paper out now: peerj.com/articles/216... 4/4

We tried to devise a proper method, 10,000 permutations later: p = 0.2597. We concluded, once you ask the right null question, the claimed structure doesn't stand out from chance. This is very different from “bonobos have extensive compositionality". 3/n

The most striking result is too simple. We took the published analytical pipeline and fed it completely _random_ data. Their statistical pipeline produced a statistically significant result in 34.5%-84.3% in simulations. Method can manufacture “discoveries” out of noise. 2/n

I get tired on animal cognition, poor methodology, theory assuming conclusions, statistical “evidence” that [insert fave animal] has a surprising capacity. We examined the Science paper claiming human-like #grammar in #bonobos (or "extensive compositionality in bonobo vocalizations"). 🧵 1/n

E.g. so called What-Where-When memory ≠ episodic memory. Other animals are expert discriminators (what), excellent at spatial mnemonics (where) & can encode time with some kind of precision. Screenshot from our paper: www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

It's interesting to be part of the animal cognition field. "We" are acting like episodic memory in animals is a settled fact, even though it’s still debated. And then papers are written about its function as if everything is fine. Isn't this intellectually sloppy? #scientificslippage

For this reason, we wrote this comment, published yesterday. royalsocietypublishing.org/doi/10.1098/... We reason that 1) their data supports rather than rejects the sequence hypothesis, as monkeys and chimps did not perform with any precision in these sequential tasks. 7/n

Few tests have been made of this hypothesis (that only humans can in general represent sequential information faithfully), and then a creative new study came out, with impressive sample sizes: royalsocietypublishing.org/doi/10.1098/... 4/n

We also presented a model that successfully accounts for how non-human animals represent sequential information: royalsocietypublishing.org/doi/10.1098/... Importantly, this model better explains sequence discrimination experiments than do ideas from rule learning, artificial grammar, etc.
