Of course the song was a cover of a US song, so she needn't have thought about Ken Dodd's tickling stick at all!

I think I've done a pretty good job of curating things I want to see on here (made easier by the default feed not being "Discover"), so I can avoid the awful stuff. Even just looking at my old Twitter account, the feed there is like a sewer of hate.

Hitler, presumably
A copy of today's Yorkshire Post partially covered by The Daily Telegraph, which leads the headline to read "Asylum village hails".

The Telegraph's main headline is "Palace hits back at Diana's brother" (who isn't Hitler from what I recall)

That time of year again... processed meats day
A banner hanging from a shelf edge in Sainsbury's advertising the two flavours of Fridge Raiders, with "That time of year again..." and "Chicken for the road?" above and below the product images. At the top of the banner is the Nectar price offer of £1 instead of £1.70. The shelves themselves are quite messy, presumably as people realise it's that time of year again

Just been for a trip to Driffield. With the amount of rain going on, they really should call it "Pissing It Down Town"

I know that costs have gone up - e.g. there used to be a good income in rags for unsaleable clothes, and other streams, but that's no longer the case. But it's also amazing what they dispose of and don't sell.

There have been multiple tests prior to this, and information put out for people in such situations to turn off these alerts.

That was prior to the launch of Emergency Alerts in the UK using Cell Broadcast, precisely because there was no system in place at the time.

One real-world example - imagine if the EAS was set off during 9/11 in the US. You'd go from live images of the event and eyewitness testimony to a scrolling message and dreadful quality audio.

Should the government embargo emergency alerts to let the BBC know what's going on? Obviously this one isn't so time sensitive, but others could be.
000
Joe Spivey @joetrev.bsky.social · 14/08/2026
I doubt it would add much for the cost of implementation - the BBC is entirely capable of switching to rolling news if required (with images and sound, rather than just text), and the figures for people with a mobile phone is about the same as people in households with a TV.

I heard the alert on The One Show first before it came to my phone. Alex Jones presumed it was a fire alarm - I suppose an emergency alert about wildfires is a kind of fire alarm

My one and only prediction for this by-election was that the lowest candidate would get 5 or more votes (which was a betting market).

I believe it's a relatively common ADHD experience - if you think that a lot of people's reading speeds are much faster than an audiobook would speak, then it makes sense that you can still fully enjoy an audiobook at an accelerated speed.
