I've been down lately. All the changes here have me feeling every inch of my immigrant status. But today, out on my walk in my suburban American neighborhood, I found a 2025 copy of Granta in a little free library, and suddenly the world is a little brighter. @grantamag.bsky.social #shortstory

Can someone explain why so many literary journals and agents still do so much social media on Twitter? Every time I go there I'm confronted by screeds of hate, lies, and vitriol. Please, publishing industry, remove yourself from the hatersphere. #publishing #agents #literary #journals #writing

Agreed. But we shouldn't let it die in literature. People need to be reminded, fairly regularly it seems, that much of the good old days actually sucked pretty hard.

Second short story in my collection finished. Really happy with this one. I'm very much enjoying the process of writing these. It's a wonderful distraction before I dive headlong into the third novel. I also feel I learn as much from a 2000 word short story as half a novel. #amwriting #shortstory

So it looks like Evan will be joining you next year! He's super excited, and was delighted to meet you last summer. As parents, we couldn't be happier with his choice.

After telling an editor that I'm not a short story writer, I challenged myself to write one this weekend. Not only did I enjoy the process, I'm really proud of the result. I learned so much about precision in language and getting small sentences to do many things at once. #writing #fiction #editing

Would this fit? Part psyc thriller, part historical fiction, part folk/rural noir with horror elements. Nelly learns her dead mother left her money, but it legally belongs to her husband. So she encourages him to defy ancient folklore hoping a curse will kill him before he learns her secret.

SWALLOW ALL THE LIGHT An isolated farmhouse A secret inheritance A trapped wife plotting to kill her husband with an ancient Irish curse. Nelly Malloy unleashes an ecological disaster when she encourages her husband to import sick rabbits into Ireland in 1953. #PitDark #A #LH

I live in Missouri, for which I expect to serve less time in purgatory. It's very humid in the summer here, and sandpaper dry in winter, neither of which suits Irish skin.

There's a bar in Ste. Genevieve Missouri that was ripped out of a paddle steamer as it sank into the Mississippi in the 1880s and reassembled in a local restaurant. Worth a visit too.

What about this: In a land where folklore warns that nature kills those who harm it, Nelly Malloy encourages her husband to import myxomatosis to cull Ireland's rabbit overpopulation, hoping his death will unlock a secret inheritance and a new life. But the land remembers everything.

Yes, I'm a fan of Butler, but her last book was published in 2005 I think. I'm talking about something new that captures the imagination of modern readers. Something like Prophet Song, although, to me, that seemed more a narration of political and social apocalypse rather than offering a solution.

I agree. But I think we need more novels that discuss these threats in the world we live in too, not just those a few steps removed from ours by fantasy or dystopian devices. People need to read a "real" person confronting a "real" authoritarian government bought by real oligarchs and corporations.

Are you still looking for dark folk stories? In a community where locals believe nature avenges those who harm it, a woman's fight against patriarchy and class causes ecological disaster. Irish setting, 1950s, a woman seeking agency by using superstitions against her husband.

Had a dream last night that I was trying to buy a cottage in Ireland, but couldn't understand the rules, or anything people said when trying to explain them. I had to ask them to repeat themselves over&over to both our discomfort. Is my mind trying to tell me I've spent too long in the USA? #dreams

Am I the only one that finds chickpea skin revolting? Why don't they come skinned in the can? If you don't peel them, that's gross, whole thing looks like a mess of peeled blisters: disgusting when they come loose in your food.

Clarity, dear reader, is key. Take this abomination, for instance. How was this giraffe dissected? Horizontally? Vertically? The arse end of the beast or the full neck, chest, shoulders, and fore legs. I can't think of a less dividable animal than a giraffe! Try using a whole rhino next time.
