Administration: building roads will lower wildfire risk. Reality: wildfire ignitions in national forests are highest in lands within 50m of roads (7.99 fires/1000 ha), lowest in wilderness areas (1.75 fires/1000 ha) and designated roadless areas (1.97 fires/1000 ha). Roads = people. People = fire.

I’m saddened to share that my friend and collaborator Evan Frost has died. Evan spent decades defending forests and in recent years found a public voice here. His work gave context to what we’ve lost, and clarity to what remains at risk. He will be deeply missed.
