These findings blew my mind, and made curious about exceptions. I found a few. They are instructive as to how the accumulation of clinical experience can consistently be translated into better outcomes for clients. Next few Substack posts will explore these issues further 7/7

This led to some rather mindboggling conclusions from Erekson and colleagues (2017): “Findings suggest that as therapists progress through formal stages of training, they do not improve in their ability to effect change in their clients.” 6/7

Longitudinal studies using within-person analyses have shown that therapist outcomes stagnate or deteriorate as they accumulate experience. One study (Erekson et al., 2017) even found this stagnation/deterioration occurring during clinical training 5/7

Multiple cross-sectional studies have found that trainees delivered superior outcomes to qualified therapists 4/7

But I was wrong. Various studies have shown that, on average, outcomes stagnate or gradually deteriorate as therapists accumulate more experience (obviously this is not the case for all therapists-there is heterogeneity) 3/7

I had always assumed that more experience makes for better therapists, that there was a mostly linear relationship between therapist experience and client outcomes, with returns diminishing only gradually over time 2/7

Therapists do not improve with experience alone.
On average, they stagnate or deteriorate. This is a curious phenomenon and we need to understand it. Here is part one of a three part series.
