My uncle was way ahead of the curve on this. I went with him to buy a used Kei truck in like 2009. At the time they were even more gray-market, as importers had to weld a plate over the gearshift that locked out everything except 1st and Reverse to limit top speed. I think he still has it.

Genuine policy question: will rolling back EPA standards stop the silly process of making pickup trucks so huge just to increase their wheelbase "footprint" so they face easier fuel economy requirements? Because smaller 1/2-ton trucks could be a nice silver lining.

I met the guy who designed those seats! His name was Bob Monacelli. He originally scribbled a zigzag on a sheet of butcher paper with a chisel tip marker, and remarked that it looked like a Native American pattern. AMC approved it, and he was very proud of it.
