Spent too much time thinking about the Labour Party, now explain it to people at Hanbury Strategy. Former Angela Rayner adviser. All views, alas, are my own.

Are there 81 undeclared Labour MPs left to nominate Jude Bellingham?

The latest in ‘we can’t have a leadership contest so we decided to have one about who gets to be Chancellor’, right down to squeezing everything out of the timeline. I suspect the view of Burnham as particularly constrained / ideologically light makes this fight easier for all sides to have

In the absence of an actual leadership contest, Labour’s internal debate is fighting a proxy contest through potential Chancellors. Miliband is being defined by critics as representing, to excess, the side of Labour’s strategic divide that wants to primarily unify the left bloc.

Burnham’s lead in any Labour leadership election looks completely unassailable, his primary would-be challenger doesn’t have great member polling at all, but it is sort of interesting that he’s willing to create ao much open space to his left, for that and for eg Greens if he does become PM.

Increasingly think an underrated skill in politics is picking losers: acknowledge that policy choices have trade-offs, that those choices are made deliberately, and use what you’re against to define yourself as much as what you’re for. Broad, shallow electoral coalitions probably make this harder

Half-cooked take: you’d get at least marginally better governing if you abolished the ‘Chief of Staff’, give narrower roles with appropriate seniority for ‘pure politics’ people, have a No 10 COO or similar to run the staff, thereby getting away from that sitting with ‘closest politics brain’

Feels like longer than a year ago that I watched my first film of 2025 waiting for the eventually abandoned takeoff of a plane. Mastermind was terrific though.

Just settling into my first day doing digital comms at the OBR. Now to sit down and watch the Chancellor deliver the Budget

Arsenal’s late winner against Newcastle is giving Keir Starmer’s speechwriters everything they need for a tortured central metaphor about how he’s going to come back from the Government’s current difficulties to win again, I’m sure

Agree with Stephen’s take that the Lib Dems are essentially seen as the minor party in the ‘left block’, so a would be LD voter is performing a vibe check on the Labour Leader to check they’re happy with the idea of them in No 10. An interesting question is how this could apply to the Tories.
