Struggling with the cognitive dissonance of witnessing genocide through a phone screen. Can't stop thinking about @carolynforche.bsky.social's poem 'The Boatman' when we read in Newcastle over ten years ago. "Leave, yes, we obey the leaflets, but go where?" www.poetryfoundation.org/poetrymagazi...

A good question. 'Roma', 'Romany' and 'Travellers' are three distinct ethnic groups. There are more. I'm a British Gypsy. Within all the groups people will interchangeably use or reject the word as a self-identifying ethnic marker. Depends entirely on the individual and the context.

Cheers for fielding this reply Sarah. I like to see 'Gypsy' reclaimed too! Good to connect here :)

God speed! p.s. There is a bulk downloader I'll tag you in just now!

010

Jo Clement @joclement.co.uk · 24/02/2025

Oh no I didn't notice this but I better go in to check tonight! I hope this isn't happening to everyone. Makes it harder to make sure you've got every book. More tactics I assume.

000

Jo Clement @joclement.co.uk · 23/02/2025

I'd say get the Plugin and Calibre because they work together. You'll need to convert the files from the original format into ePUB if you want them to work elsewhere. The original format is for Kindle only. If you're staying Kindle, it wouldn't matter.

000

Jo Clement @joclement.co.uk · 23/02/2025

Make sure you download the DeDRM_tools plugin and add the serial number in Calibre. I also had to restart my computer to get everything to update. Surprised how well it has worked! Let me know if you get stuck, I'll see if I can help :)

100

Jo Clement @joclement.co.uk · 23/02/2025

It was a bit confusing at first but relatively intuitive. You can even convert the books to PDF, which is super helpful for me.

Jo Clement @joclement.co.uk · 23/02/2025

Thanks Weatherwax @sherbert-lemon.bsky.social if you can access the serial number of your Kindle(s) it looks like there's a work around.

000

Jo Clement @joclement.co.uk · 23/02/2025

Bit repetitious and very clicky, but not too bad to do manually once you get going. No reason they couldn't have built a bulk downloader feature into the Amazon site either, other than they don't want us accessing our files. *blows raspberry*

010

Jo Clement @joclement.co.uk · 23/02/2025

What a godsend, esp for non-tech heads like me! Bun is a similar but not as user-friendly bulk downloader. I got all my files manually but the next hurdle is conversion. Can't flip from AZW3 to ePub due to DRM. Dropboxing files and crossing this bridge when I come to it. So frustrating!

210

Jo Clement @joclement.co.uk · 23/02/2025

And don't get me started on how inaccessible the entire process has been. You need a PC, the right kind of physical Kindle and not a phone app, the time and not to mention the smarts to get all the tech working. Amazon knows exactly what it is doing. Infuriating.

100

Jo Clement @joclement.co.uk · 23/02/2025

I do this too! I even got the little page-turning clip on so I can really nest down and rest. The folks who need Kindles most will be worst affected, especially with this quiet lock-in launch. Really sucks. I hope you can get sorted, pet. Worst comes to worst, new Kindle / potentially two devices?

100

Jo Clement @joclement.co.uk · 23/02/2025

Definitely worth asking. Most towns have one now, I'd do the old ring around to every shop within range. Seems like such a slog, but when there's so much material on yours...

000

Jo Clement @joclement.co.uk · 23/02/2025

Oh no, that's such a pain. I also just saw you're a fellow migraine-r. The yellow light on Paperwhite has helped mine, so I don't particularly want to stop using it but hate feeling blocked in.

100

Jo Clement @joclement.co.uk · 23/02/2025

Hey, if you're in the UK, shops like CEX always have healthy Kindle stock and you can pick them second-hand. Would circumvent the postage etc. Seems such a waste when you've so many books.

100

Jo Clement @joclement.co.uk · 23/02/2025

Yes, and in the current climate, deleting books is def a possibility. I got my Paperwhite yonks ago. They're making massive profits through tax dodges, so you can't even buy a book through the storefront now. What seemed very convenient is proving a royal pain in the - ! Kobos look pretty good!

010

Jo Clement @joclement.co.uk · 23/02/2025

Also, you can't download any Kindle Unlimited Books. Some books I paid full whack for randomly will not download but almost all the others are moving across seamlessly now. Good luck getting your files!

010

Jo Clement @joclement.co.uk · 23/02/2025

There's quite a bit of scaremongering. If you stay on Kindle, you should still be able to access them (if Amazon continues to make them available or if not, if you keep the device offline), but they're playing the Apple game of locking us in.

100

Jo Clement @joclement.co.uk · 23/02/2025

Also just to say, if it's any consolation, you should still be able to access all those files on a new Kindle. I added my Fire tablet to shared devices and can view everything on there. But long term, even buying Kindle books is a slog now and yet another Amazon tax dodge...

100

Jo Clement @joclement.co.uk · 23/02/2025

All I can say is EEK! That's a lotta downloads. Perhaps worth a punt getting a £20 reader off eBay? I heard a few folks with new models are buying older ones, adding to their devices and this circumvents lockout. It is relatively quick to get the files, but you have to download them one by one.

100

Jo Clement @joclement.co.uk · 23/02/2025

After a few hours at it, I've got my first eBook download to move into Calibre. Go Slaughterhouse Five! FYI - I am downloading eBooks I've bought so I can move my library onto another device if I decide to leave the Amazon/Kindle ecosystem.

051

Jo Clement @joclement.co.uk · 23/02/2025

Glad to see people stepping back from Amazon shopping, including Kindle. I often buy eBooks for research and teaching convenience because I don't want to physically own every book I consult. And not everything is available via my library. I double-buy most books in hard and digital formats.

030

Jo Clement @joclement.co.uk · 23/02/2025

Same. It should work, but it doesn't. The info in this link has been very helpful regarding the plugin but still no joy yet. I'm on Windows and tried Chrome/Edge browsers. www.reddit.com/r/Calibre/co...
