If there is one thing that is going to tip me over the edge into insanity, it is trying to log in to a banking app. I'm in a doom loop of 'please verify yourself' and 'your business already exists' - YES, I KNOW!!

Lots of pieces in the print media recently about the decline of reading in children. Here's a little thread on ways to help your kids get reading again:

Ha! Publishing is tough right now. You gotta take what you can get. Now you need to work out how to spin that for the cover of the pollution-bestselling paperback...

This is great advice about world-building. You do need to make sure that you - the writer - knows every detail of that world though. Even if you don't communicate details to the reader, your knowledge, or lack of knowledge, will be detected by the reader...

Also, the best way to be really good at writing is to keep on doing it, even if you don’t share it with anyone. Keep writing, no matter if you get rejections from agents or publishers. And reading of course! It really is the best way to understand what is expected of a published writer. #ukteenchat

Write for love. It's not an easy job, at any stage, whether you are just starting out looking for an agent or if you're a best-selling author. You need to love to write to get you through the ups and downs! So enjoy your writing, first and foremost! #ukteenchat

I like that wildness very much! The more you can park your editor-brain for the first draft, the better! #ukteenchat

It can really vary, depending how stacked we are. There are the usual pinch points of the fairs and Christmas, but we are always on the look-out so no time is a disastrous time to submit, really... #ukteenchat

No. I have the most ENORMOUS respect for anyone who can put 35,000 words in order and write a whole book. I can't do it - the editor in me is already cutting my writing before I've finished the sentence. #ukteenchat

Joanna Moult @joannamoult.bsky.social · 03/02/2026

Trust in your agent is so important. The publishing industry is bruising and complicated, so you do need to feel like your agent is guiding you through safely. #ukteenchat

Joanna Moult @joannamoult.bsky.social · 03/02/2026
Trust, patience, mutual respect! It's a real partnership and the more you can be honest with each other, the better. Sometimes you hear things you don't want to hear, so taking time to process that before responding is good - on both sides! #ukteenchat

Joanna Moult @joannamoult.bsky.social · 03/02/2026
A powerful voice or a strikingly different opening scene. Something that I haven’t seen before. I'll be honest, I struggle with submissions that start with a car ride to somewhere new or a wake-up scene. #ukteenchat

Obviously, my mind has gone entirely blank, as it always does when someone asks me what I've read and enjoyed!! But I was talking about HOLES by Louis Sacher the other day and that is a fabulous example for that age group, in my view. #ukteenchat Not the most contemporary example though!!

Yes, sadly. We had hoped that titles such as Lottie Brooks might have cracked things open a bit for this age group. It has but it is still a very sparse area for readers and we worry that we lose so many of them at this stage. #ukteenchat

We launched in 2014, with a big tour round children’s writing groups and built up our writer networks from there. It was huge fun. Now we are much more established and hopefully better known but we are still on the hunt for fresh new voices #ukteenchat

GLITTERATI - my new YA thriller, out with Penguin, March 2027. Imagine if a teen ‘Talented Mr Ripley’ lied his way into a White Lotus-like setting where the outrageous wealth on display can’t cover up dark secrets for long.
Screenshot from article in The Bookseller. Text reads:
Penguin, an imprint of Penguin Random House Children's UK, has pre-empted two
"gripping" YA novels from Simon James GreenText reads: The books will be published under the name SJ Green and the first
novel, Glitterati, is a "thriller-
romance that invites readers into an exclusive world where high society meets high drama and the highest of stakes: murder".
Editorial director Linas Alsenas preempted world rights (including film and TV rights) from Joanna Moult at Skylark
Literary. Glitterati will publish in paperback in March 2027 with the second standalone novel coming in 2028.
The Penguin rights team have already sold French rights for the two books in a pre-empt deal.Text reads: Glitterati follows Tommy Baxter's arrival on an exclusive island in the Caribbean ready for a week of extreme luxury and unrivalled pleasures. The synopsis continues: "He's part of a very select, international group of teens whose close-knit families are the world's elite and most powerful. Except he's not really Tommy Baxter. He's a young con-artist looking to uncover dirt on these glitterati so he can extort them for big money. But
'Tommy' soon realizes that his lies might be too daring to last - and that he might be developing feelings for one of his marks. As the net closes in on him, he uncovers secrets far darker than he'd ever expected - after all, there's nothing more exclusive than murder."Text reads: Green said: "Having been raised on a diet of Agatha Christie as a teenager, I've always had a yearning for lies and murder.
I can't wait to welcome readers into the glamorous, deceitful and dangerous world of the Glitterati - golden boys and golden girls who do not play by the rules - and meet Tommy Baxter, the smooth-talking con-artist who plans to drive a wrecking ball through their charmed lives. I'm so excited to be reunited with dream editor Linas Alsenas on this project and to be embarking on this new chapter with the brilliant team at PRH, who blew me away with their enthusiasm and vision for this novel from the get-go, and whose stable of outstanding YA thriller authors I have long admired."
