Station car parks are full early in the morning. Expanding them is incredibly expensive and never meets demand. Vastly improving feeder buses, walking and cycling options is a better, more affordable, more scalable way of getting people to the station.

Melbourne train station carpark overflowing just weeks after opening
This train station in Melbourne's booming outer west has been open for less than a month, but is already experiencing growing pains.

Leidseplein, Amsterdam in 1972 and today
Then and now comparison of Leidseplein in Amsterdam — the 1972 photo shows a car-filled intersection in front of Stadsschouwburg Amsterdam, while the modern photo shows the same scene transformed into a pedestrian plaza with people walking and trams nearby.

Eerste van der Helststraat, Amsterdam in 1978 and today
Then-and-now comparison of Eerste van der Helststraat in Amsterdam. Top, 1978, black and white: a street jammed with cars, including a van, an Opel estate and a saloon, parked and queuing both sides. A cyclist threads between the traffic in the middle distance.

Bottom, today, in colour: the same street, now a tree-lined pedestrian zone with no cars at all. Tall leafy trees arch over the brick paving, and the street is busy with people walking, including a family with children, past café terraces and market stalls under the shopfronts.

On a nice day, Point Ormond (Elwood) is a great place to watch the sunset🌇😎 But the local buses aren't coping. They're packed after dusk, just as the frequency and capacity drops - more services needed! #Melbourne #Route246
Crowds at Point Ormond. Pic: writtenbymeaghan on Threads - Also shown with photos of crowded route 246 bus.

A 70 zone outside a school on a road lined with houses and driveways. But no school zone because it's a "highway"?

246 bus absolutely jam packed at its southern end even on a Sunday afternoon. Leaving tens of people behind at stops because they can't fit. Not even 15 minute headways are enough for a route like this. Bus priority and higher frequency is clearly needed. @ptua […] [Original post on aus.social]

Halvemaansteeg, Amsterdam in 1979 and today. From being dominated by cars with barely any space for people to a car-free area with cafés and cycleways. Nothing natural about car dominance - it was a choice, and so was undoing it
Split image showing Halvemaansteeg, Amsterdam, then and now. Top: black-and-white photo from 1979 with cars and a taxi dominating a narrow street, people squeezed onto small pavements. Bottom: modern color photo of the same street, now car-free, with a cycleway, café seating, and a calmer, people-focused atmosphere.

Many streets in the Netherlands once looked like those in the UK today. What matters is what happened next. Hoogeveen shows this clearly: a car-dominated main road in 2019, upgraded by 2024 with cycle tracks. Dutch roads are continuously improved to make cycling safer & neighbourhoods more pleasant
Two photos of the same main road in Hoogeveen. The earlier image shows a wide, car-dominated street with no separate cycling space. The later image shows the road narrowed for cars, with a wide red bidirectional cycle track where several teenage boys cycle together, separated from traffic by trees and parking. Two photos of the same street in Hoogeveen. The earlier image shows a wide roadway focused on motor traffic, with no protected cycling facilities. The later image shows a redesigned street with a red bidirectional cycle track, greenery and calmer traffic, where three teenage girls ride side by side.

Tallawong is the perfect case study on how park-and-rides can never scale up to meet the capacity of a metro line but will consume the prime land around the station trying to do so. www.smh.com.au/national/nsw...

The Sydney metro station where there are 2.5 cars for every parking space
A review into commuter car parking at one of Sydney’s busiest metro stations has painted a grim picture of the daily parking ordeal – and demand is showing no signs of slowing.

Pakenham passengers have to catch Frankston line and change at Caulfield. Train pulls up at Caulfield, doors open and the train we’re meant to change to literally departs. Now an 11 minute wait for the next one. This is how not to run a network.

This particularly annoys me – when the ad wrap covers the tram windows with a block colour, meaning it could've just been left uncovered. Ad wrap should be banned over tram windows.
