The Eagle Stone, Strathpeffer. #StandingStoneSunday #Pictish #Eagles #Horseshoes #RossAndCromarty #Photography
Photograph of a standing stone, a little under a metre in height, its surface mottled with lichen. Carved into the face of the stone (c. 500-700 CE) one can just make out an inverted horseshoe shape above a stylised eagle. The stone stands amidst a scatter of smaller stones within a grassy area, in front of a wooden barred fence and some trees.

NEW Why holding a placard is a terrorist act, while causing disruption in a balaclava is not The mess caused by ministers and the police not taking terrorism law seriously By me at @prospectmagazine.co.uk www.prospectmagazine.co.uk/ideas/law/th...

Recent events in England now reveal the practical difference between terrorists and protesters. It would seem that terrorists peacefully hold placards and get immediately arrested, while protesters wear black uniforms and balaclavas and disrupt infrastructure and do not get arrested.

How did we get into this mess? How have we placed ourselves in the position where terrorism legislation is used to detain and prosecute peaceful protesters, while those adopting the terror tactics of private armies seem to be free to do as they wish?

The reason is that for some time British politicians have not taken terrorism legislation seriously, and that ministers have got into the habit of misusing terror laws for easy targets.

Broch research vehicle, 1963.
Dùn Dòrnaigil broch - circular building ruin with the north-east wall standing to perhaps 7 metres - with to the left a car probably belonging to Dr Euan W MacKie, photographed in black and white in 1963. The broch has an entrance doorway with a massive triangular lintel, to the right of which is a measuring stick.

Arms of John Murray, 1st Marquess of Atholl (left) and of his wife, Lady Amelia Sophia Stanley (right) from a monument in Dunkeld Cathedral. #Heraldry #CoatOfArms #Dunkeld #Cathedrals #Photography
Coats of arms belonging to John Murray and his wife, Amelia Stanley.

The left-hand shield is divided into four grand quarters, the upper-left and lowrr-right of which are themselves sub-divided into four quarters containing in the upper-left and lower-right six vertical stripes alternating in colour between gold and black, and in the upper-right and lower-left a gold background crossed by a horizontal stripe bearing a chequered pattern in white and blue. The upper-right and lower-left grand quarters each depict, upon a blue background, three white five-pointed stars within a gold-coloured double border decorated with inward- and outward-pointing fleurs-de-lis.

The right-hand shield is divided vertically in two, with its left half replicating the whole of the left-hand shield. Its right half is quartered, with the upper-left comprising three buck's heads in gold upon a diagonal blue stripe against a white background. The upper-right quarter is divided by a saw-tooth boundary between gold beneath and blue above, the latter region being decorated by three white circles. The lower-left quarter bears three conjoined legs in white upon a red background, while the lower-right bears two white lions in passant posture, also against red.

Both shields are topped with golden crowns, above which are silver helmets. Above the left-hand helmet is the Murray crest, comprising a bearded and bare-chested man holding upright in his right hand a sword and in his left a golden key. Above the right-hand helmet is the crest of the Stanley family, comprising a golden eagle perching upon a baby swaddled in red. The left-hand shield is supported by a bearded man, naked save for a green loin-cloth, and the right-hand shield by a stag. Beneath each shield dangles a medallion depicting St Andrew grasping a saltire from behind.

Across the top a scroll bears the motto of Clan Murray: FURTH FORTOUN AND FILL THE FETTERS. Across the bottom, another scroll bears the Stanley motto: SANS CHANGER.
