(Just FYI explaining how DC residential parking passes work.)

I have an off-street parking space (Cap Hill) but pay for a residential parking pass anyway because sometimes there’s a need to free up the back space. My husband’s car has its own residential parking pass. The second one costs twice as much as the first. And a third one would cost even more.

The DPA does not permit the government to seize businesses and their operational assets. Or do you mean require Starlink to provide services in return for fair remuneration?

To work as an attorney for the federal government, a jd has to pass the bar and be in good standing. For non-attorney positions, no such requirement but, I know a number of people with law degrees in non-legal positions who do not hold themselves out as attorneys, even though they passed the bar

Still, it seems wild to me that derived citizenship is contingent forever on whether the government can find a reason to disapprove retroactively and revoke without process.

Apparently there’s no conflict of interest if there’s no duty to be representing our interests in the first place. Maybe I’m reading this wrong but
A spokeswoman for Mr. Witkoff said that he
"takes no salary and travels the world on his own plane, at his own expense, working on behalf of President Trump to negotiate peace and bring hostages home to their families." She added that Mr. Witkoff "has no conflict of interest and no financial stake in this matter."

But think how great “saving sunshine” will be for the northernmost reaches of Alaska. I’ve never been there, but I’m sure changing the clocks is a major inconvenience.

See, by avoiding those not-so-lucrative entanglements that might suggest you owe some duty to the US government and taxpayers, you can pursue other interests without conflict.

Just because it’s an armed conflict doesn’t mean it equals “hostilities” under the WPR, which has to amount to “war in the constitutional sense.” OLC has never found one of those, I don’t think, at least in a public opinion.

Last night, I asked it about options to use a national emergency to override prohibitions on using troops at the polls, and it gave a fairly decent answer, even citing my posse comitatus report (which doesn’t address that question). I posed the same question again just now, and got similar response

Jennifer Elsea @jnklz.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
I asked it a couple of questions and was surprised the responses weren’t bad. Of course, it cited some of my work, so I guess I *would be impressed. (One thing it gets wrong must be my fault for not getting my report update published yet 🙂)

If the President declares a national emergency, can the military seize election equipment?

A national emergency declaration does not, by itself, authorize the military to seize election equipment.
What a national emergency does
Under the National Emergencies Act, a declaration does not unlock every emergency statute automatically. The President must specify which laws will be used. Congress can terminate an emergency by joint resolution. See 50 U.S.C.

Limits on using the military
• The Posse Comitatus Act generally forbids using the Army or Air Force (and related forces by other law) to execute civilian law unless the Constitution or an Act of Congress expressly allows it. See 18 U.S.C.
§ 1385 and CRS,
The Posse Comitatus Act and Related
Matters7.
• Separate criminal law restricts armed forces interference in elections. 18 U.S.C. $ 593 7 makes it a crime for an officer or member of the Armed Forces to, among other things, try to set voter qualifications, prevent qualified voters from voting, or interfere with how an election is run.

If only there were some way to discover which insurance companies are defrauding the government of ACA subsidies without kicking all enrollees off their policies if they haven’t filed a claim.

Jennifer Elsea @jnklz.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
People who don’t exist can hardly be committing fraud. The claim seems to be that insurance companies are committing fraud by enrolling phantom healthy people. But language used to describe the proble—and the solution to it—sure makes it sound like people getting insurance is the problem.
