Student journalists still believe that it’s more important to hold powerful people to account than it is to hold on to access to those powerful people. They haven’t become Savvy Insiders yet

A moment of reflection: I'm 27 years in as a DJ at WQFS. And I've been often thinking about when/if I should hang it up and step aside. I've been eyeing the 30 year mark more and more. It feels nice and round and reasonable.

Okay. Watching a local band cover New Order's "Love Vigilantes" in the middle of their show. I like seeing bands dig deeper for covers.

Drive-by Truckers (about to be 19 times) Gary Numan (3 times) Fugazi (sadly only 2) Lucinda Williams (about to be 5 or 6, I think?) Pulp (2 times) Definitely a list of others I've seen multiple times: Sonic Youth, Kathleen Edwards, Jim White, Vic Chesnutt, Futurebirds, El-P, Lyle Lovett, Dylan, etc

Drinking a Bell's Hopslam for the first time since my 20s probably? Anything with a 10% ABV probably should have been left in my 20s, but too many great trivia nights were spent having too many of these (one is definitely enough) while hanging with friends, so here's to those memories. Cheers!

Today I learned that Jesuit historian Francois du Creux (a.k.a. Creuxius) created one of the first maps to refer to "Lake Ontario," which was featured in his 1664 history of Canada. A copy of his map is in @amphilsociety.bsky.social's collections: diglib.amphilsoc.org/islandora/ob... #MapSky 🗃️📜🌎

Title: Tabula novae Franciae

People: Contributor (ctb): Du Creux, François

Description

Includes inset map; "Chorographia regionis Huronum. Hodie desertae." Copied from François Du Creux, "Historiae Canadensis seu novae Franciae libri decem ad annum usque Christi 1656" (Paris: 1664). This was printed in the Champlain Society Publications, volumes 30-31, translated by Percy J. Robinson (Toronto: 1951). A note by P. J. Robinson states that this map deserves study and is of special value on account of the inset map of the Huron country, the improved outline of the lakes, especially Lake Ontario, and Georgian Bay, the marking of the trails to the Hudson Bay and of the new route discovered by the Groseilliers and Radisson from Lake Nipigon.

I was a Cub/Boy Scout for a number of years. I was lucky to have a troop that was good in reinforcing the qualities embodied in the scout oath. But the national organization is a disgrace and has been for a long time. Their new cowardice, by backing off of inclusive steps, is sadly predictable.

All of this. They've also made it unlikely that my children could ever go to Iran in their lifetime. I was disappointed enough that it looks like I might've missed my window to ever visit, but they're messing it up for every living American. They're isolating 100 years of US kids from the world.

"I'd kill for my child" okay but would you put aside your preconceived notions of gender or sexuality for your child? would you apologize to your child when you're wrong? would you tell your child they can be whoever they want to be, and mean it? your child doesn't need more killing in their name

Question for people who don't live in Greensboro, NC: do any of your cities have city-wide competitive swim meets between all of the private and public pools with swim teams? It's such a neat thing that Greensboro does (and has since 1957), and I wonder how common it is.
