All this isn’t meant to exculpate HS teachers from responsibility; we fail kids. It’s to underscore how complicated, and broken, the US system is. The only proper solution is full-scale revision with sincere effort to prioritize the person and education as a whole, not the policy (light years away)

What a HS teacher often *can’t* do is address those foundational skills, for a variety of reasons (funding, pacing requirements, lack of content [ie, a HS teacher was not necessarily trained, or remembers his/her training, to teach decoding]). The tension is real.

To complicate: grade-level standards at HS will often ignore foundational skills with the expectation that students already have those skills. When they don’t have those foundational skills, a teacher *can* honestly find ways to accommodate to meet those standards.

Often lines are straddled to balance these conflicting requirements. Can the student write an essay independently? Maybe not. But has he/she now learned the concept of theme or how character development impacts the plot? Very probably! As such, the student can earn some good grades.

An English teacher being asked to have a student write a 5-paragraph essay (to meet grade-level standards) when that same student struggles to create effective sentences is the norm. The teacher *could* fail the student but then will be knocked for retention rates. This doesn’t touch SWDs

On paper, this might sound logical. In practice, it creates issues when teachers get students years behind grade-level. Teachers are asked to improve/close academic gaps while also teaching grade-level standards. This happens without grace, programs, or clear policy on *how* to do this.

For a real answer that no one asked for: pressure by admin and funding policies. The pressure on teachers, esp at the HS level, to get kids to matriculate is intense and tied to job retention, due to 4- and 5-year graduation rates being tied to school funding and school ratings.

He has a 0.07 G/90 and 0.31 A/90 for his City career. For reference: Nelli’s terrible, no good, very bad league season last year was 0.08 G/90 and 0.33 A/90. For his Arsenal career, he’s at 0.33 G/90 and 0.19 A/90. Make it make sense.

Just think he’s “plateaued” with us. Still love the player. Don’t want him gone necessarily but I do think we’ve reached a good point for separation. we platform him well at all and he at least deserves to be on a team that will do that (and he’ll get at least 15 goals when someone does)
