Atomic Empire is fantastic about supporting and promoting local designers, which elevates them in my mind enormously. When you walk in the store the local designer rack is the first thing you see. They judiciously stock weird stuff.

You will quickly develop favorites and your favorites will end up *heartbroken* and *alone* as the man you love - and who clearly loves you - is married off to some harridan to prevent *her* from marrying the (admittedly, common and poor) man that *she* loves, oh dear I'm ranting again

It's so good! I was *gasping* at some of the cards I drew. Shock, excitement, indignation, horror at the fragile bonds I was about to callously tear asunder without recourse...

Are we doing hot TTRPG takes? Here's mine: If a game isn't working for you, get up and leave. You can be graceful about it but don't stick around. If someone at your table gets up and leaves, thank them, because they are improving everyone's experience.

One of @jmstar.bsky.social's favorite (and one of his favorite films generally) is Věra Chytilová's 1978 comedy Panelstory aneb Jak se rodí sídliště (English: Prefab Story; or How A Housing Estate is Born). He always wanted to capture the feeling of these stories in a game and here is The Apartment!

It doesn't take away from your thesis, but I sold outdoor apparel for years and Patagonia's build quality and functional design are impeccable. The average use case might be cringe but the gear is actually pretty great. I sorta wish it weren't.

*Another* thing, I generally hate including a dedicated facilitator role, because being a facilitator is sort of boring and potentially intrusive, but it is also an act of service and for a big, elaborate game like White Death it is essential, and that's OK. Plus it is fun to watch, very wild.

Jason Morningstar @jmstar.bsky.social · 27/09/2026
Another thing, White Death runs to a soundtrack that is unmoored from the game's theme and full of complex lyrics, which you'd think would be off-putting, but it is absolutely on point *tonally*, and works perfectly. I am generally anti-music in larp for various reasons but am reconsidering (again).

One thing I've taken away from seeing this go so well is that I should try some riskier things, maybe make some experiences that are not so carefully bounded, that allow for the extremes of epic failure and epic success. I don't know what that looks like for me yet!
170
Jason Morningstar @jmstar.bsky.social · 27/09/2026
Trust is hard! I prefer to have more control over the entire experience, which generally means games I make are *reliable* within a set range and rarely drive themselves into a ditch, and also rarely reach the heights that a game of White Death will routinely reach.
160
Jason Morningstar @jmstar.bsky.social · 27/09/2026
Facilitating a game like White Death, play is so intensely internalized that you just can't tell from the outside whether a player is bored or having some astonishing cathartic epiphany. But it's incredibly well designed and built to make space for good play, so you just have to trust the process.

Late in the game, melancholy music plays and only five people remain alive. Twenty-five Transparent Ones are dancing in ecstasy in the darkness just off camera.
Five players stand bathed in harsh light amid chaos and detritus. Darkness surrounds them. We can't see their faces.

The campaign for Lonely Timbers is chugging along nicely so I thought I would talk about the game's origins. This game was originally born from the GameChef competition back in 2017 where we were encouraged to design games around the themes of borders, both literal and metaphorical.

I've had a lot of fun games with people who only knew D&D. If you're open to the experience it isn't that big a leap. I often feel like we, as a hobby, argue about games the way birders argue about different kinds of finch. To an outsider it all looks the same.

If I *was* going to take the bait, I'd say Fiasco is 100% an RPG but Dungeons and Dragons quite obviously is not, just to stoke the vein-popping rage.
