My fear remains not that the AfD takes power by winning an election here in Saxony in 2029, but the CDU decides its easier than compromising in their minority coalition with SPD and align with the AfD instead mid-term, and the aftermath is a chaotic fragmentation of anti-AfD options.

The centre-right in much of Europe doing the "we are polling in the high teens despite going off to the right because we're being punished for being too left-wing when in government" strategy while never being challenged on the fact you need an electoral majority to govern.

Bavaria. The richest and most culturally dominant state in Germany. AfD are polling at 20%. But the Governing coalition is made up of the most conservative part of the Conservative faction and a party to the right of that. It’s national problem

I find it fascinating speaking to people from in and around Dresden, who would have been young children in the early 90s. The transition was tough and so many people left. Th idea that the system and culture would just change with a bit of cash thrown at it is ridiculous
