Leadership from UC Berkeley. "...we see recent actions going beyond those purposes in ways that threaten core values: academic freedom, freedom of inquiry, & freedom of expression.... we will be steadfast and unrelenting in our efforts to defend those core values."
Like many of you, we are gravely concerned about recent Federal government actions in regard to higher education. While we recognize that the government plays an important role in addressing discrimination and ensuring good stewardship of public resources, we see recent actions going beyond those purposes in ways that threaten core values: academic freedom, freedom of inquiry, and freedom of expression. We do not know what demands the Federal government may make of Berkeley, but do know that we will be steadfast and unrelenting in our efforts to defend those core values. A Berkeley without academic freedom, without freedom of inquiry, without freedom of expression is simply not Berkeley.

We recognize that some of you may find our statement too timid or too bold or deficient in some other way. That’s okay—a key to Berkeley’s excellence is our diversity of opinion and perspective. Robust debate is essential to scholarly advance. The purpose of a university is not to present us with ideas with which we are comfortable. To borrow from Clark Kerr, it is to make us safe for ideas.

We don’t know what will happen. In part because we don’t know what may be demanded of us and in part because we won’t be the only decision makers. But what we do know is that we will stand up for Berkeley’s values and defend them to the very best of our ability. For 157 years, through the education it provides and the research it produces, Berkeley has produced immense economic and societal benefit to its students, California, the nation, and the world; this societal jewel needs to be preserved and defended, and we will toil tirelessly to see that it is.

I have written a short statement responding to mass firings today of #NOAA / National Weather Service (#NWS) staff (which were concentrated among recent hires as well as highly experienced staff who had recently been promoted). Please see below screenshot & below for full text.
Statement begins:
The mass firing of both new hires and recently promoted senior staff within NOAA, including mission-critical and life-saving roles at the National Weather Service (NWS), is profoundly alarming. It appears that NOAA staff fired today include meteorologists, data and computer scientists responsible for maintaining and upgrading weather predictive models, and technicians responsible for maintaining the nation’s weather instrumentation network (among many others).

Housed within NOAA, the U.S. NWS is a truly world-class meteorological predictive service, perhaps singularly so. Its cost of operation is only ~$3-4/yr per taxpayer—equivalent to a single cup of coffee—and yields a truly remarkable return on investment (at least 10 to 1, and perhaps 100 to 1, depending on methods of estimation). NOAA and the NWS collectively offer tens to hundreds of billions of dollars each year in net economic benefit through a combination of averted losses and efficiencies gained....

I don't think people really get how these employee purges are just going to break the culture of public organizations for a very long time.
“You are presenting us as trophies in front of OPM,” one angry employee said in the meeting, referring to the Office of Personnel Management, according to the transcript. “I don’t want to hear anything about how you are sad, how you feel bad for everyone who’s losing their job today.”

“You screwed people, hardworking people, who trusted the word of this agency, left their careers, wherever they came from,” they added. “That’s on all of you. Take some accountability.”

An NSF official apologized to the fired workers, noting that they were “following orders” from the Trump administration.

Hey everyone. We're in a new place and it's pretty nice so far. How about we keep it that way by making a change? How about we don't insult, belittle, curse, demean, or make fun of people whose opinions differ from our own—even if we think they are not reading. Wouldn't that be better?

Jonathan Lilly @jmlilly.bsky.social · 10/02/2025
I don't think it's true that the underlying issue is matter of intelligence, and, respectfully, I don't think it helps communication to use insulting or demeaning words. I think the problems are misinformation, faulty beliefs, and, perhaps, intentional deception (though I hope not on the last one).

And, if you think this will all be solved by AI, all I can say is that is a very big bet that will change the fabric of our country, and one that is not reversible. Are you sure about that? Are you really sure?

Jonathan Lilly @jmlilly.bsky.social · 10/02/2025
... pretty much anything you can think of that requires a high level of science or engineering. No researchers --> no teachers --> no cool stuff. Anyway you look at it, that sounds like a bad deal. 11/

Jonathan Lilly @jmlilly.bsky.social · 10/02/2025
This means, if you have no researchers, you will also have no TEACHERS to teach the next generation the skills they need to make bridges, skyscrapers, cell phones, computer chips, water sanitation plants, medical devices, satellites, rockets, pesticides ... 10/

Jonathan Lilly @jmlilly.bsky.social · 10/02/2025
And, again generally speaking, they are only engaged in teaching because of a deal every (or almost every) university makes with its faculty: you teach part of the time, you can do research the rest of time. This is the fundamental win/win that powers our higher education system. 9/

Jonathan Lilly @jmlilly.bsky.social · 10/02/2025
And I'm sure we can all relate to the difference a great teacher makes. Second, generally speaking, people don't decide they want to become a TEACHER of physics or fluid mechanics or structural engineering or chemistry. They get interested in these subjects and then want to RESEARCH them. 8/

Jonathan Lilly @jmlilly.bsky.social · 10/02/2025
First, because the people who know their subjects best are the people who push the boundaries of it. They know it vastly better than someone who simply studied a book and can regurgitate its contents. And because they understand the topic so well, they can help others learn it. 7/

Jonathan Lilly @jmlilly.bsky.social · 10/02/2025
Did people in the private sector teach them? Obviously not. Did full-time teachers of highly specialized subjects teach them? Actually, for the most part, no. They were taught by RESEARCHERS. Why? For two reasons. 6/

Who is designing all this stuff? Engineers, mostly. And how did they get the skills they need for their work? Well, they studied math, physics, chemistry, electrial engineering, etc., in college and maybe in graduate school. And who taught these engineers? 5/

Do you really want them to all move to Europe or help Amazon make more money? Would that be better? Regardless, there is something else very important to consider. Cars are important to the US economy, right? As are planes, computers, and a bunch of other manufactured products. 4/

Jonathan Lilly @jmlilly.bsky.social · 10/02/2025
This cut would mean that 2/3 of the people who are currently doing research in the US will either leave the country or quit doing research. These are, generally speaking, very smart people who don't care too much for money and just want to do something good for the world. 3/
100
Jonathan Lilly @jmlilly.bsky.social · 10/02/2025
Cutting NSF funds by 2/3 means only 1/3 of the research that we currently have. Maybe you think that is a good idea. After all, research doesn't make anything of economic value, right? Let's just assume for the moment that it does not, and see where that leads us. 2/
