Always, much more than compulsory performative belonging activity (no offence intended to anyone putting genuine effort into welcoming/welcoming back their students) #LTHEChat

Much as we love bookshops, they need more than love to keep going. A bookshop can be the centre of a whole community. Bookshops support authors; organize events. A thriving bookshop teaches the next generation that literacy matters. So don't just love your bookshop: actually buy books there.

As we're coming into autumn, my favourite season, I'm going to say Metal. In her keynote, @sandra-abegglen.bsky.social talked about this being about clarifying, refining, discerning; that hope isn't about uncritical positivity. I have questions! #LTHEChat

I'm thinking that it's possibly not only others who don't fully understand governance. I know induction should help, but sometimes things drift. A good reminder on p7 about schemes of delegation, which "...contain vital information as to who makes which decisions" #ukgovsread

Then I almost disappeared into a whirlwind of questions prompted by the definition - who holds power, who is listened to and really heard, about doing our best to make sure power is used for good and more #UKGovsRead

I started with some uncomfortable wriggling about the idea of power, which is almost certainly not what most of us got into governance for and yet here we are. #UKGovsRead

My imaginary shed enjoys dappled light, framed by a sturdy apple tree and a cherry tree covered in blossom. My real shed is rather more neglected, in need of reorganisation and repair, frowned on by an overgrown bay, but loved by neighbouring cats as a sunbathing spot. Breakfast, you say?

I have a file called "Quotes to cheer us up" where I try to save what our students have said about the change we've made to them/their work. I find lovely mentions from our colleague-students on LinkedIn a little squirmy still, but I am grateful #LTHEChat

A1 To be fair, I think I see it framed as something we (staff) need to nurture and support, rather than it being the students' responsibility to feel or develop, but if that's not how it is elsewhere, colleagues could collaborate across a course and think together about what works #LTHEChat

What might help? A buddy/mentor for newer governors to discuss what might be good questions ahead of a meeting; induction training, general and specific to the school; the option of questions in advance; modelling and acknowledging good questions during a meeting. Any other suggestions? 2/2

I really support encouraging governors to ask questions, especially when it prompts us to question our assumptions. However, contrary to what's often said, I do think there are silly questions: when someone has not read the papers or has not been listening. 1/2

Thinking about several schools, as gov and clerk, there are non-negotiables: induction and safeguarding, then it becomes looser, depending on the role(s) a governor takes and their prior experience. Some are proactive, some wait to be told, then nudged, then reminded again...
