Solutions in search of problems that create new problems, etc.
At HarperCollins senior leaders purchased Claude licenses from Anthropic months ago “but very quickly realized they didn’t know how to implement them,” according to a current employee. Dozens of junior- and senior-level staff were then “voluntold” to become “AI Champions” and were tasked with discovering use cases in monthly brainstorming sessions with staff across the company.

Why would we let Anthropic decide this for us? If you ascribe to a moral philosophy or religion that disavows being mean to a toaster, that is fine. It is not however fine for a tech company to make, functionally, a moral law for a talking word toaster that is promised to rule us one day.

One thing I find endlessly funny about the rise of AI is that it has revealed that there is a large number of people who believe that the reason they wrote essays at school or university is their teachers were desperately waiting for them to provide a definite answer to “Lear: what’s up with him?”

Our IT office this summer accidentally deleted hundreds of hours of lectures and other video teaching materials and regularly sends out AI slop newsletters. So naturally now they’re requiring the rest of us to take cyber security lessons.
Email subject: October is Cyber Security Awareness Month!

Text: Faculty and Staff,
October is Cyber Security Awareness Month. Each week in October, Information Technology Services will be highlighting a different topic on cyber security. We will also be launching our campus wide month-long training campaign, that is required for all employees. This training will cover subject matter on our four main cyber security topics this October:
Week 1: Phishing and Social Engineering
Week 2: AI Safety and Deepfakes
Week 3: Data Security
Week 4: Incident Recognition and Reporting
