“You’re so strong! I could never handle your illness” People say this all the time to people with chronic illness. I assume it’s meant as a compliment - but shows a stunning lack of awareness We don’t get a choice. We’re strong because we HAVE to be. You can’t trade your body in when it gets sick.

People understand illnesses like cancer - you get sick & get better or you die. They can support & empathize with that. When it comes to chronic illness … that support & empathy dries up. The idea that someone could be sick FOREVER & not die is too much for people /2

Being disabled and chronically ill is beyond lonely. Far too many people in society can’t comprehend illnesses which are permanent & unrelenting but don’t necessarily kill you. As a result they EXPECT you to get better. When you don’t - they abandon you. 🧵/1

If Chronic Illness was an emotion from Inside Out, randomly, half the buttons on the console stop working. Sometimes the whole board dies. There’s nothing Joy (& positive thinking) can do to turn it back on. There’s no control over when or where it happens or if/when your buttons will work again
