Really enjoyed reading "Pluralistic: The Reverse-Centaur’s Guide to Criticizing AI" by Cory Doctorow, and although he stresses that he cannot and does not predict the future, I do hope his concluding arguments prove prescient pluralistic.net/2025/12/05/p...

AI is a bubble and it will burst. Most of the companies will fail. Most of the data-centers will be shuttered or sold for parts. So what will be left behind?

We'll have a bunch of coders who are really good at applied statistics. We'll have a lot of cheap GPUs, which'll be good news for, say, effects artists and climate scientists, who'll be able to buy that critical hardware at pennies on the dollar. And we'll have the open source models that run on commodity hardware, AI tools that can do a lot of useful stuff, like transcribing audio and video, describing images, summarizing documents, automating a lot of labor-intensive graphic editing, like removing backgrounds, or airbrushing passersby out of photos. These will run on our laptops and phones, and open source hackers will find ways to push them to do things their makers never dreamt of.

Mercredi (24 sept): Je vais parler de mon projet de recherche actuel--une revue systématique de la littérature qui porte sur la traduction et les bandes dessinées. I'll compare the results of 5 bibliographic database searches with GPT-5 and Scite_. C'est une communication en français.

Went to a fabulous performance of Carmina Burana by @torontosymphony.bsky.social last night. The orchestra was joined by the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir, Toronto Children's Chorus & three extraordinary soloists. My only question: who translated the lyrics in the program? There was no credit.

I'm training two new academic cats. So far, they've taken an inventory of my book collection before moving on to chase their tails for half an hour. They will make cameo appearances during Zoom calls upon request. #caturday

So glad TCAF has found a new venue for 2025. I've really enjoyed attending this festival: interesting talks by comic artists and writers, lots of exhibitors to visit, and many opportunities to get your favourite comics signed.

The first stage of the data collection for my new research project on comics, graphic novels and translation is done. I'm ready for some down time! I've just finished painting the minis (and reading the very long rule book) for this board game, so I'm going to try out Pest today.

Finally decided to check out Blue Sky and was excited to discover how much it looks and feels like Twitter-that-was. Looking forward to being more connected with the translation studies community again!
