Agreed, I've fallen into that trap before for sure. I think another issue is overestimating our system of checks and balances. That all really depends on people respecting norms and doing their jobs in good faith. Without that or a real opposition party, there's no checks, balances, or rule of law.

While he doesn't seem particularly clever, I think his team/bosses are. They're very good at manipulating narratives. I have a theory that the whole point of his absurd election denialism after 2020 was to poison the discourse around the topic, to make the very idea of tampering seem implausible.
