The truth is the shared foundation where we can begin to build better systems to work for everyone.
A simple orange heart with a maple leaf and feather inside. It reads: "National Day of Truth and Reconciliation
is a Canadian day of memorial where we recognize and grapple with hard truths.
Let’s open our eyes and our hearts
and build something better
together." From the Election Truth Alliance

Giving up the power of your vote because something nefarious might happen is obeying in advance. It makes sure your voice is silenced rather than risk that someone may attempt to silence you. If bad actors are going to try to manipulate election results, you don’t have to do their work for them.

Should we still vote if elections can be 'rigged'? 🧐👀 Read our latest Substack to learn why sitting out isn't the answer, 'too big to rig' is a myth, & hand counting votes in front of witnesses fulfills a critical function that machines can't replicate.

The next time someone tells you that 'U.S. election results are accurate because there are audits', you can remind them that election audits were NEVER DESIGNED to detect manipulation or ensure the accuracy of an election. That is not and has never been the intended function of an election audit.

It's easy to lose track of what's a real priority and what's just noise. But when all governing decisions come downstream of elections, ensuring the accuracy of those elections becomes paramount.

This is deeply concerning. The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) has sent observers to monitor every U.S. federal election for the past two decades. Governors need to pick up the phone and find out if an invitation extended by leaders of states can fill that federal gap.

Facts matter, especially when it comes to election integrity. Myth #16: An audit and a recount are the same thing.
A text graphic from the Election Truth Alliance that reads Myth Versus Reality. Myth number 16 debunked. An audit and a recount are the same thing. Reality: REALITY: Recounts and audits are different procedures that answer different questions. A recount repeats the counting of ballots—typically all cast votes—to verify whether the recount matches the reported result. An audit examines a sample of votes, machines, or polling places to test whether hand counts match machine or cast-vote records, verifying the process, not the result itself. Recount rules vary widely by state:
41 states and D.C. allow requested recounts under certain conditions, while nine do not. Statewide recounts are exceedingly rare: only 36 of 6,929 statewide elections from 2000–2023 resulted in one.

Most U.S. mail-in ballots are still counted by machines, making them vulnerable to some of the same security risks as in-person votes. That said, mail-in ballots appear to be safer from vote manipulation than in-person voting -- though “safer” does not mean “risk-free”. 🧵

Why do authoritarian countries still hold elections? 🤔 Elections serve multiple purposes, even in countries where the outcome is a foregone conclusion. Let's look at the 2026 Russian elections as an example: 1. Even sham elections can provide a government with perceived legitimacy. 🧵

A paper record is an important safeguard, not a substitute for verification. You have to actually LOOK at the paper record for it to be a meaningful check.
Myth Vs Reality (ETA Logo)

DEBUNKED - Myth 14:If a county or state uses hand-marked paper ballots, the election is automatically secure.

REALITY: Hand-marked paper ballots are an important safeguard, but marking ballots by hand is not the same as counting them by hand. Most hand-marked paper ballots are counted using “optical scanners” — vote-counting computers. Broad and rigorous hand-count auditing processes are necessary in order to verify that hand-marked paper ballots were counted accurately by the machines that scanned them.

A clip from an Al Jazeera article from Nov 2024 that reads "Ract Check: Was Elon Musk's Starlink used to rig the US election? [...] No -- voting equipment is not typically connected to the internet."Fact Check of the Fact Check: Election machinery connects to the internet through other pathways at different stages in the process, providing opportunities for systems to be compromised.

Teardowns of voting and tabulation equipment have revealed inactive Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or cellular modems. Machines compromised at the hardware level can have those vectors of compromise re-enabled.

Hackable cellular modems in election machinery and firmware/ software installed or updated on this equipment can all be potential points of attack.

The need to connect vulnerable election management systems (voter registration databases, election night reporting systems) to internal cellular networks creates exploitable internet-facing points of attack even when core systems are believed to be isolated.

Voter fraud means a voter attempting to vote fraudulently. Election manipulation means a compromise of the election system, not a single vote... Sidenote: This is our final myth in Part 1 of our Myths vs. Reality series! Thanks for sticking around and for all the feedback 😊 Myth 13#: Since voter
Image with dark blue background, titled Myths vs Reality. Text is Myth 13#: Since voter fraud is very rare in the United States, this means that other forms of election manipulation are also highly unlikely. Reality: Voter fraud and election manipulation are not the same thing.

Voter fraud is votes cast illegally (e.g. impersonation, double-voting, or ineligible voting). For this to influence an election, it would require thousands of voters to act in coordination, each risking being caught.

Election manipulation (cyberattacks, digital tampering, or machine-hacking) can be pulled off by a small group or even a single actor with skills to compromise the system and leave little trace.

Although research finds that voter fraud is exceedingly rare, this tells us very little about the likelihood of election manipulation.

In recent days, we’ve received a lot of questions from people who want to see an audit of the 2024 U.S. Presidential election. This is a reminder that 2024 U.S. Presidential election ballots and records are not federally required to be retained after September 5, 2026 and may be destroyed after that date.

If you want to preserve the ballots to verify the vote in your state, here’s how you can get involved:

1) Check existing state laws regarding ballot/record retention in your state;
2) Talk to a lawyer about filing for a court injunction to preserve the ballots and/or;
3) Call the office of your state Attorney General or Secretary of State to ask what procedural steps they can take to retain ballots longer than federally required.

No hand counts of substantive sets of ballots? No way to defensibly claim there was no impact... Myth #12: If investigators couldn't prove that election interference changed the outcome of an election, that means it's been proven that the interference didn't affect anything.
A red and blue graphic. Title is Myth vs Reality. Myth with a debunked graphic next to it. Text reads: If investigators couldn't prove that election interference changed the outcome of an election,
that means it's been proven that the interference didn't affect anything. REALITY: Failing to confirm that election interference changed the outcome isn’t the same as confirming that it definitely did not. (Similarly, an inspector not finding evidence of termites does not mean a house is termite-free.)

The limits of what was scrutinized at the time must be considered — especially if the scope of what was examined (e.g. no hand counts of paper ballots) was never
sufficient to prove a negative in the first place.

A text graphic from the Election Truth Alliance entitled Myth versus Reality and stamped with the word Debunked. It reads MYTH #10: It would take a widespread effort involving a lot of people to manipulate elections, so there would be plenty of evidence if it occurred.

REALITY: With the right point of attack,
digital election manipulation would take a shockingly small number of people to implement.

Equipped with the right expertise and access, a small group of people could compromise vote-tally transmission from precincts to counties to the state, or breach a single vendor supplying voting machines or software updates — potentially shifting a national outcome.

And, if done precisely, be virtually untraceable without full hand recounts under rigorous chain of custody.

MYTH #9: The U.S. election system is too decentralized for our elections to be manipulated.

Underfunded election administrations, and a focus on speed over accuracy, have handed this infrastructure to a few largely unregulated private companies that disclose little about their finances, ownership, and inner workings.

MYTH #8:
U.S. elections are the most safe and secure in the world.

Reality:
In 2022, U.S. election infrastructure was ranked last among the world’s liberal democracies by global election integrity watchdogs.

The majority of U.S. votes are counted by machine, including most paper ballots, resulting in visibility gaps for human observation.

Other countries will verify the vote with observers physically watching ballots being counted and recorded, all by hand.

When computers are trusted to count the votes and humans cannot ‘see’ digital manipulation happening, the level of scrutiny needed to confidently claim “safe and secure” is lacking.

These recent election news stories have sparked a lot of conversation, so we’re chiming in to talk about election integrity.
A statement from Election Truth Alliance dated August 21, 2026: "These recent election news stories have sparked a lot of conversation, so we’re chiming in to talk about election integrity.

Recently, President Trump has reportedly voted by mail, again, despite ongoing attacks regarding the security of mail-in voting. As you'd say: what's good for the goose should be good for the gander.

Moreover, our state analyses of mail-in voting data typically appears clear of 'election integrity red flags' seen with in-person voting data.

Meanwhile, up north in Minnesota, Mike Lindell is reportedly pursuing a recount. We support all candidate’s right to recount under state laws.

Hand recounts, under careful chain-of-custody procedures, can help serve to prove that election results are accurate, verifying the vote — and hopefully putting accusations and concerns to rest.

We look forward to watching to see if, and how, this pursuit progresses.

REALITY: Federally, the election machinery certification process is voluntary. After certification, oversight relies mainly on the manufacturers self-reporting irregularities with their machines and disclosing any modifications.
Compliance is rarely enforced. While over 40 states choose to require federal certification (or parts of it), each state decides for itself.

MYTH #1:
Election machinery cannot connect to the internet during vote tabulation, making interference impossible.

REALITY: Internet connection during tabulation isn’t necessary to interfere with election results. Election machinery connects to the internet at different stages in the process, providing opportunities for systems to be compromised.

Technology is changing faster than people can keep up with— yet U.S. elections are entrusted to machines produced by privately-owned companies that count the majority of all votes cast in the country. What if the solution to cutting-edge technological attacks was actually looking at the paper proof?

We’ve received a lot of questions from people who want to see a hand count audit of the 2024 U.S. Presidential election. This is a reminder that 2024 U.S. Pres. election ballots and records are not federally required to be retained after September 5, 2026 and may be destroyed after that date.
An announcement from Election Truth Alliance dated August 12 2026: entitled "On Ballot Retention for the 2024 U.S. Presidential Election"

This is a reminder that 2024 U.S. Presidential election ballots and records are not federally required to be retained after September 5, 2026 and may be destroyed after that date.

At the Election Truth Alliance (ETA), we’ve filed an amended complaint in Pennsylvania seeking preservation of ballots and other records from the 2024 U.S. Presidential election for key counties in that state.

If you want to preserve the ballots to verify the vote in your state,
here’s how you can get involved:

1) Check existing state laws regarding ballot/record retention in your state;
2) Talk to a lawyer about filing for a court injunction to preserve the ballots, and/or;
3) Call the office of your state Attorney General or Secretary of State to ask what procedural steps they can take to retain ballots longer than federally required.

How can you improve trust in the outcome of America's elections? 🤔 U.S. elections are decentralized, so fighting to verify the vote is local! 🔍Ask your state and local officials about how to become an independent election observer.
The image is the Kombucha girl meme, which depicts a woman’s facial expression after she takes a sip of kombucha. You can’t see the kombucha drink in the image, but it shows her two facial expressions side by side. First is the facial reaction of disgust and second is the facial reaction of appreciation. The meme has been modified with the words added above the disgusted facial reaction reading: Accepting ‘trust me bro’ from a company supplying the vote counting computers.

Above the facial reaction of appreciation are the words: Hand verifying the computer counts before certifying future elections.
