I am basically here to procrastinate while finishing my Ph.D. thesis... I am studying the Arctic Ocean, Carbon Budgets, Sea Ice Biogeochemistry, and Ocean Acidification. Grateful to live in 🇨🇦, originally from 🇩🇪. [She/her]

First the #US election debacle, then the implosion of the #german parliament, now this. As if this week hasn't been frustrating enough... I hope democracy in the #EU stays strong.

This is terrible. I am sorry you must deal with this, and I respect you for staying strong and vocal. You are doing important work! I would not have the stamina, that's why I am mostly staying silent on these websites. Bluesky is the first network that feels a bit safer.

Yes, the global ocean might still have plenty of CO2-undersaturated waters. But do we want to live with the consequences, widespread ocean acidification? Also some coastal ocean ecosystems are already emitting CO2 regularly.

I recommend obsidian. It's all in markdown, so super portable. The program itself is quite powerful with zotero integration, embedded images, canvases for mind-maps, and you can tag&search your notes easily. And open source 😊

Good News! Canada is taking steps in the right direction and is increasing funding for grad students and postdocs. It might be a bit late to affect my PhD, but at least the prospect of staying in Canada for a postdoc feels less like financial self-harm. SOS, thank you for fighting this fight :)

Yes, please! I am so sick of ppl saying "all conferences must be remote" even if that negatively impacts early career scientists, when there are other ways to reduce a conferences Carbon footprint.

Well, you, being an institute, could change that by hiring more female researchers in better positions, and make sure there's equal pay for equal positions, if I may respond spontaneously.

Especially iron fertilization can yield unpredictable toxic algal blooms which can reduce fish stocks, even in neighboring countries. I do not know any one of my colleagues who would say, "we did enough research on this". I really would love this to be a solution, but the risks outweigh the reward.

Yes, the article talks mostly about the geological method ccr, and I was too fast to bin it together with marine cdr, as did you ;-) And by the way, my response basically summarized the last part of the article, which lists the environmental concerns. And based on my research, I agree with them.

Jo Länger @jlaenger.bsky.social · 15/11/2023
As the article says, these kinds of mcdr projects have been investigated for quite some time, we still don't know enough and leaks would be fatal for the ocean. No-one wants the collapse of ecosystems because of highly acidic waters. Dumping more stuff into the ocean can't be the solution.

And that's why we need to do anything in our power to reduce greenhouse gas emissions NOW.

And then there's a bunch of marine life that needs sea ice as habitat: fish hide in small caves, some phytoplankton spores need it to overwinter and there are awesome algae that hang from the sea ice. All these organisms have to adapt, if possible. They are the base of the foodweb.

Plankton like Pteropods is affected because higher CO2 in the water leads to corrosion of Calcium Carbonate shells. So they have to spend more energy to build these shells. Together with warming water and changes in sea ice patterns, it could get too much to handle, and the population would shrink.

Jo Länger @jlaenger.bsky.social · 10/11/2023
Think about CO2 in water as a club soda. The warmer it is the faster it gets stale meaning the CO2 in it that makes it fizzy escapes. And sea ice as lid that mostly prevents air-sea gas exchange. The ocean is still cold and could dissolve more atm. CO2 which leads to Ocean Acidification.

Jo Länger @jlaenger.bsky.social · 10/11/2023
Did you know that the scientific community discusses, if the Arctic Ocean is going to be a sink for atm CO2 or a source, once summer sea ice is gone? For example, warming waters could mean more CO2 emissions to the atm and less uptake. But there are many other factors and the uncertainty is high...
