Earnest post, but: a thing I like here is it’s okay to have moments of happiness in public without being broadly scolded, and I believe that sustaining this kind of humanity will be very important as we resist fascism. We have to sustain each other. Making joy isn’t denial, it’s how we will survive

The "slow breathing to convince your body that you are not actually in physical danger" thing actually kinda works, y'all.

These days are not good at all for so many people around here, so I'll try to brighten the mood, even for a second, with a new Hubble image! 🔭 This is the NGC-5530 galaxy, as seen by Hubble earlier today. This galaxy is located some 40 million light years away. HD: flic.kr/p/2qEpfnz

A spiral galaxy seen in visible light. The spiral arms appear red/brown, with the centre appearing really bright. Some star clusters can be seen in the arms, appearing blue. Some Milky Way stars are photobombing the image, as well as background galaxies.

One of the points I made was in reference to “community notes”. Its being pitched as a new form of moderation. But the reality on X is that almost every time, Notes only show up to the people who volunteer to respond. They aren’t visible to everyone else. So they really don’t have an impact

Are there any statistics on deaths that are directly a result of denied health insurance claims? I can’t seem to find any. I think that should be included on on death statistics. My fear is that the number would be up there with the big killers like automobiles, OD’s, and guns…

I was interviewed at CES this morning. We mentioned that consumers will decide whether they want to be on a platform that is “unfiltered free speech “ or “ moderated”. I mentioned that I loved @bsky.app , and spontaneously people started clapping 🔥.

Anyone have any ideas on how we can train media literacy through media consumption?

“Will pay any amount.” Feels like one of those futile pleas we’re going to hear from wealthy people more and more in the era of climate change.

Keith Wasserman: Does anyone have access to private firefighters to protect our home in Pacific Palisades? Need to act fast here. All neighbors houses burning. Will pay any amount. Thank you.

It's really not about leaving the other platforms. It's about bringing people here and giving them more engagement than the other apps. That's what people want. Engagement. Takes nothing to offer it If there is a user on another app that you like, DM them and invite them here. Post and tag me

Little rant: This is the time of year for anti-Oscar gripes, and the one I like least is "I haven't even heard of these movies!" Folks, that's on you. The 25 or 30 films in the mix have been talked about incessantly in entertainment media since September. Many are in theaters. Many are streaming. >

Facebook removing fact checking??? I was not aware they had that considering all the stuff my family thinks is true that they see on that app. Happy to be on a site where some people still value something like citations and credit!

Media warfare: how have we come so far but slid back to tribal thinking? Do we even know what news is anymore? How can we distinguish between news and entertainment even for ourselves? Is the only answer education and teaching people critical thinking skills at a young age? How do we solve this?

Sunrise over Chesterman Beach, Tofino BC. Pinky/purple clouds hover over a distant mountain in the background. Foreground a small outcrop with tall trees. The tide is low with a few sand bars. The water that remains is reflecting the sky, mountain and trees

The line between news and entertainment has been blurred by social media over the last decade because we have fewer people who are able to critically analyze, read for understanding, and think critically. Buckle up, it's only going to get worse.
