We have cameras that can measure the spin rate of baseballs, but we are still deciding field goals with some old guy craning his neck.

Jackson Kent hasn’t pitched very well, but he will also be at a disadvantage in that the Nats probably won’t want 4 lefty starters in their rotation (in the event that they don’t sign anyone else).

The two areas I thought the Dolphins would be decent this year were running the ball and stopping the run. We are horrific at both.

Nats could have at least had the decency to blow the record-setting save after midnight so as not to do it on my birthday.

Been through a few rain delays at Nats Park, but chatting with @kenjennings.bsky.social about Victor Robles will definitely go down as the most memorable.

I was super impressed by Maxwell Romero, Jr. when I saw him live in Richmond earlier this year. Worked great ABs, made loud contact, and had an incredible defensive play. Last night he hit HR #20 on the year and he is annihilating AAA pitching in his first 21 games at the level.

It’s nice being a fan of an NL team and only having to be reminded every other year what a horrible viewing experience Rangers games are.

God damn, what a great and heartbreaking story from Jesse. Sign this guy as a reliever and let him pitch an inning! He can’t be worse than the rest of our pen.

Fun fact: our nearly-everyday third baseman is quite literally the softest hitter in baseball. Excited to keep watching him play!
Bottom of MLB average exit velocity rankings, showing that Jorbit Vivas may as well be out there with a fungo.

Ok new idea: we never play the Phillies again. Just hop on a plane in the morning and head back to DC. What’s the worst that can happen?

Jared Calfee @jkcalfee.bsky.social · 05/08/2026
It’s unconventional I realize, but playing from ahead of the Phillies clearly does not work. So let’s give falling behind by a bunch a try!

Broad thoughts on this deadline: Toboni believes in this offense and has adjusted his timeline for contention. There are enough high-upside relief arms coming back that the bullpen could legitimately be a STRENGTH over the next two seasons. They also added badly needed rotation depth.

I continue to feel this way. I believe the plan was to hope for a huge year and then deal him for a Sotoesque return, and I still think that. It’s of course dependent on getting the big offer, but if Boston offers Arias + a couple high end pitching prospects, I think yesterday was CJs last Nats game

Nats bullpen badly needs swing and miss. Yovanny Cruz struck out 340 in 288 career minor league innings.

New WFCG! I break down the Connelly Early trade, and why it's a win-win. What are the Nats getting in Early? And why did they feel comfortable giving up Mead? wfcg.substack.com/p/wfcg-11-na...

If we shell Max today (on his 42nd bday) then we take the W and so be it. But if he looks really sharp against us, man it would be cool to flip a very low level prospect for him for the stretch run.

If the Nats trade for one serious reliever and DFA Krook, you could have a bullpen of: -New guy -Yean -Beeter -Ribalta -Kranick -Cosgrove -Cornelio -Palmquist You can kinda squint and maybe that’s not the worst bullpen ever assembled at least?

Young controllable starting pitching is the best thing we could acquire right now. So even though I’d really come to like Mead this feels like a good trade. Need to see spring training Brady House now.

Dylan Crews walked 4 times in May and June combined. He’s up to 13 in July. Looking much less frantic at the plate lately, if still not making as much hard contact as I’d like.

I know the Nats FO has said that how the team plays will determine what they do (which they kind of have to say that) but Toboni doesn’t strike as someone who makes major decisions based on a small sample size. I’m guessing if they had a plan going into the year, they will stick to it.

Some thoughts on the upcoming trade deadline: if I were Paul Toboni, I would employ a very aggressive buy/sell approach.

It’s a great point. Access to something as trivial as voting rights should be at least as hard or harder than accessing a Never Ending Pasta Pass™, which the framers had the foresight to include in Article VIII (Starches and other Complex Carbohydrates) of the Constitution.

Jared Calfee @jkcalfee.bsky.social · 19/07/2026
They need to start scoring catchers for reverse-framing. Catching the ball in such a way that it’s called a strike by the ump but made to look like a ball to the hitter so they waste a challenge.

This is a clear divide between people with and without kids. People with kids are up early against their will and want morning sunlight, and they want the sun to go down as early as possible so they can put their kids to bed at 7pm.

The difference between X and Bluesky is that people on Bluesky are fully aware that it’s a bubble of likeminded people. I’d also note that Bluesky’s opposition to Platner was entirely personality based. His (very popular) platform aligned with most people’s views on here, but he’s a scumbag.

The Nationals’ slugger, a second-time All-Star at 23, is on a tear this season. An offseason message from his mother played a role.

The latest chapter in the Nats quest to not just get with the times, but ahead of them? They finally have a pitch design team. Free to read: www.nytimes.com/athletic/738...

The Nationals didn’t have a pitch design team. The new unit could change their future (Gift Article)
While the Nationals experimented with pitch design in years past, there wasn’t a defined process across the organization or a design team.

Checking out Harrisburg in Richmond on the off night for the big boys. Devin Fitz-Gerald roasted two balls right at defenders in his first two ABs, then went opposite field for his first AA hit and dinger. Petry and White also checked in with their first AA knocks.
