What makes the world’s first bar joke funny? No one knows.
A 4,000-year-old Sumerian proverb about a dog that walks into a tavern has left scholars and thousands of online commenters scratching their heads. The joke’s meaning has been lost, but finding it cou...

From 2022 to spring 2025, American PhD-granting universities posted an average of 289 openings in departments of chemistry and biochemistry. Starting in the fall of 2025, that number fell to 185 openings.

Because DNA polymerases have kept evolving, and you can’t easily predict their function from sequence along with a known relative, I think will keep finding new ones for a while, even though we may be just about done describing all the human ones (and those were discovered only a few years ago)

E. coli share three of these families, and organisms have at least one B family DNA polymerase. But this all implies that the last universal ancestor of all life has several DNA polymerase that evolved in forever untraceable ways

This is in contrast to (most famously) ribosomal RNA and RNA polymerases (I think). Humans have … seven or eight? …DNA polymerase families, and they mostly do not have any clear, traceable evolutionary relationship to each other despite sharing the same general fold and catalytic mechanism

Since I got my early scientific training I’m DNA polymerase biochemistry, something that has stuck with me and I still find strange is that it’s a evolutionarily critical class of protein that doesn’t have an obvious single evolutionary origin around the time of LUCA

Something I strongly believe is scientists need to go to “where people are” and also not to outright dismiss concerns, however unfounded But I don’t think expertise should be abandoned. We’re a society where people generally like/trust their doctors and individuals they know and see as respectful

Subject for another time, but *living* outside the US, for at least 6 months at a stretch but preferably 1 -2 years or more, is incomparably enlightening. In many cases more "affordable," because longer stays usually involve some kind of job, an exchange program, etc. (About 14 yrs total for us)

There would be no Google Deep mind Nobel prize for Alphfold in 2024 without these people. Either Google Deepmind, EMBL, ERC or Sanger-Wellcome centre should step up… this is a rare example of true incremental arc of scientific progress with a massive payoff for biomed.

In the wake of mass restructuring efforts across the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), the FDA has missed yet another approval decision target date.

GSK had expected to secure an FDA nod for its IL-5 antibody Nucala in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) on Wednesday, but the May 7 deadline has come and gone without a decision from the U.S. regulator.

It would be “nice” to explain this randomness and find something clear to blame. But a lot of it is just bad luck. Effective medicine (and prevention) requires us to recognize this and find solutions that take it into account.

Maybe it’s just because Easter is close, but this reminds me so much of the biblical passage, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?" Diseases of course have risk factors, but a lot of it is random and the “cruelty of nature.”
