My partner is a pinball geek. It’s such a cool hobby if you have the space for machines. He buys them used, repairs and upgrades them, then sells them for about what he paid. And you meet people at tournaments. It’s one of those hobbies that hits several levels on Maslow’s hierarchy

This statement made my brain stop, go back, and recontextualize all of it

Humans have inhabited Bougainville for some 30 millennia. Their trouble with outsiders traces back to a mid-1700s pit stop by the French nobleman Louis Antoine de Bougainville. Having “discovered” the island, he promptly named it after himself, putting it on the map.

The ensuing centuries brought a string of occupiers: the German Empire, Australians and Japan, which seized Bougainville during World War II until the US kicked them off. After the war, Australia took over the island (again) and held it long after other Western powers deemed colonizing unseemly — into the 1970s.

Sometimes AI note takers catch moments that weren’t meant for outside ears. Isaac Naor, a software designer in Los Angeles, said he once received an Otter transcript after a Zoom meeting that contained moments where the other participant muted herself to talk about him. She had no idea, and Naor was too uncomfortable to tell her, he said.
OtterPilot, Otter’s AI feature that records, transcribes and summarizes meetings, only records audio from the virtual meeting — meaning if someone is muted, their audio will not be recorded. But if users manually hit record, Otter receives audio from the microphone and speakers.

My great grandfather invented the machine to make the ice cream bon bons that were popular in the 20th century. They’re little bites coated in chocolate. Can’t really buy them anymore but they came in a tub and you ate them by hand.

It's been a decade since I left the wildest, most transformative, most challenging place I ever worked: Burning Man. The 2024 festival takes place in a couple weeks. Between now and then, I'll post some photos of the people who changed my life, just by being themselves & giving no fucks.

This is me, standing on the workbox of the old white pickup I used to drive around the desert, holding up the iPad I used to capture videos that I would post on the Burning Man blog. Behind me are the dusty Calico mountains. Below me is the dusty flat pan of the Black Rock Desert. One of my favorite hiking trails passes by this secret little pond. Nobody is ever there, but someone has brought two old school chairs for you and your buddy to sit and admire the view. Hiker culture is good sometimes.
