“I won’t leave you,” Grey interrupts, his voice overflowing with all of the emotion we felt that night. “Indroxin takes you, it takes me.”

Tears brim my eyes, but I refuse to let them slip onto my cheeks. My gaze still on the window, I nod. “Then you left.”

“And then I left.”

I look at him then, at the emotion shining so brilliantly even in the dim light of the vehicle. It glimmers out of him as if he is a star, burning brighter and brighter, taking all of him until he’ll inevitably fade into empty nothingness.

I’m having this belated realization that there are places in this country where people don’t hear Spanish and other languages spoken all the time (at the grocery store, the post office etc), don’t see store signs in Spanish or other languages. I’m glad I don’t live that way.
