Josue De Paula has already shown he can help the Dodgers at the plate. But they won't play him in the field, so he can't play if Ohtani is DHing. So how bad is De Paula's OF defense? I talked to scouts and watched 100+ OF plays of his for this: www.baseballamerica.com/stories/can-...

Can The Dodgers Trust Josue De Paula's Outfield Defense?

J.J. Cooper presents a closer look at Josue De Paula's defensive struggles. Could they keep the talented hitter from helping the Dodgers this postseason?

I would suggest that the graphics inside the story that show how the strike zone has changed for lefthanded hitters over the past decade or so is worth the click.

JJ Cooper @jjcoop36.bsky.social · 22/09/2026

The MLB strike zone this year is smaller than it was last year, and last year's zone was significantly smaller than it was in 2024. This year's adjustment at the bottom of the zone is I believe tied to the shift from front of plate measurements to mid-plate. www.baseballamerica.com/stories/the-...

The MLB strike zone has gotten narrower and the bottom of the zone has moved up significantly this year. The zone now is 411 square inches as compared to 495 square inches in 2015.

This year 10 MiLB hitters reached 35 HRs Last year, 2 did. This year, 25 hitters reached 30 HRs. Last year, 5 did. This year, 75 MiLB hitters reached 25 HRs. Last year, 18 did. This year, 171 MiLB hitters reached 20 HRs Last year, 66 did.

idk who would be interested in occasional posts analyzing Elliott’s lyrics but I thought I’d highlight this, from Go By. this is about all the useless work (touring, interviews, photo shoots) that gets in the way of the real work (art)

Someone’s in the way of pretty words and inside slurs
All the things they have to say to perform the work that they’ve rehearsed
It’s a waste of time
I’d put it behind me once and for all
And let the hype decline
If the problem wasn’t mine

With Konnor Griffin on the roster the Pirates are 39-31 (.557) going into today's game. With Konnor Griffin not on the roster (6 games before he was called up + 2 IL stints), the Pirates are 35-43 (.449) going into today's game.

Last year I wrote a piece about how Kevin McGonigle was a Near-Perfect Hitting Prospect. As a hitter, the closest analogue to McGonigle I can find in the minors this year is Josue De Paula. An explanation of their similarities: www.baseballamerica.com/stories/josu...

Josue De Paula Has Kevin McGonigle-Like Hitting Traits

See how Josue De Paula's 2026 minor league season mirrors Kevin McGonigle's 2025 campaign in more ways than one.

Thomas Pannone has just thrown the fifth nine-inning CG perfect game in International League history. The 32-year-old Nashville lefty (Brewers org) dominated, needing only 93 pitches to do it. The final batter got to a 3-0 count, the first 3-ball count Pannone had since the 2nd.

Random JJ interest. Feel free to ignore. As a massive Elliott Smith fan, I recommend @jamie-fisher.bsky.social's "Nobody Broke Your Heart" wholeheartedly to other fans. It's both the best/most complete biography I imagine we will ever get of him, and an extremely thoughtful and well-crafted read.

I tried to study this from a variety of directions, including modeling how balls hit the same EV/launch angle/spray angle in the same ballpark in the FSL performed differently this year. But also using available data across all levels. If you have other study approaches, I'd love to hear them.

I think everyone is aware that offense is up across MiLB. I don't think most are aware of how much it is up. It's the highest run environment since the current MiLB system was formed in 1963. It's higher than any MLB season other than 1930. Story: www.baseballamerica.com/stories/expl...

MiLB runs per game in 2026 are the highest we have seen in any modern MiLB season.

River Ryan has been around a little while ...

River Ryan was pitching important innings for his college team at UNC Pembroke back when current Pirates shortstop Konnor Griffin was a fifth grader.

I think the new format allowed players to also have a lot more in the tank when we got to the final round. Usually the best HR derby hitters in the first round run out of gas and are done for the later rounds. Not a problem tonight.

What Jordan Walker just did was pretty incredible. Swing after swing. One screw-up and it's over. Entire crowd (other than his family) against him. And he did it.

If the HR Derby intros are to be believed, here is the flow chart for Phillies fans on whether to boo or cheer the players. 1. Is the player a Phillie? If yes, cheer. 2. Is the player Mike Trout? If yes, cheer. 3. If answers to 1 and 2 are no, let them have it.

Once we get really rolling with the Home Run Derby started, would love to hear your thoughts on what you think about the Netflix broadcast and the rules changes.

Don't worry about JoJo Parker's ability to hit velo. He just missed homering on a 101 mph Miguel Sime Jr. fastball.

120

And here comes the most velo we will see today I'm guessing. Miguel Sime Jr. is entering the game.

Rays C Nathan Flewelling has the signature moment of the 2026 Futures Game (so far). Pulls a pitch into the right field stands for a two-run HR. The Top 100 Prospect didn't crush it (96.5 mph, 365 feet), but it is the biggest hit of the game.

Ryan Sloan reaches back for 99.8 mph.

030

Luis Pena looks like a 3B. It's been a fun look for him over there in the Futures Game.

162

I appreciate some of the touches this year at the Futures Game. The Hartford Yard Goats on-field emcee is here. They just brought out Reading's Crazy Hot Dog Vendor (riding his ostrich as one should). The minors are awesome. Great to see it being brought to a big league park for a MiLB showcase.

070

And I jinxed him. Now this is what I saw in the Breakout Game.

010

This is a much better Liam Doyle than what I saw from him in the Cards' spring breakout game. Consistently 99 mph and throwing strikes.

110

I will say, trying to keep up with the draft while watching the Futures Game is a bit too much for me. I want to be utterly locked into both.
