Continuing the trend (RPGs bought that I'll probably never play), as well as on sale at DTRPG, Skullkickers: Caster Bastards and the Great Grotesque. If you're not familiar with the name, the fantastic comic book author Jim Zub created Skullkickers as a comic before he became the long running author

I don't talk about power levels anymore outside of the comics themselves. Theorize all you want, but I won't be confirming or denying any of it (except if someone manufactures something I did not say/write).

None taken. Some fans assume extremes: That we're either corporate robots performing company dictates or have complete control of these characters and stories. The truth is found in the middle, doing our best to navigate our personal creative ideas while incorporating larger IP expectations.

Sorry you had to deal with that, Steve. I will never post about unpublished ideas again for that very reason. The unpublished what-ifs get idealized over the actual hard work of what comes next and, besides, I may be able to use/repurpose unused ideas down the road: youtu.be/mR738h8wdm4?...

Absolutely. Every so often, it feels like magic. If you've completed stories, you're not "aspiring." Most of the game is staying in the game, building skills and seeing where the journey takes you.

Dear semi-conscious brain- Thank you for solving that crucial story beat this morning while I slowly woke up. The hard work you do after hours is greatly appreciated and you have saved my ass once again. Love, Jim

Was asked about what the most challenging parts of working in comics are and thought other people might find it helpful so I'm posting my response here.
- Our job is communication and entertainment, communicating a great story and entertaining our readers. But that also applies to the whole creative team: communicating well with each other and making sure each person on the creative team knows what they're doing, why they're doing it, and is appreciated for their hard work.

- Working on a monthly comic is not just working on one story/issue at a time. Because we have to send an issue off to print every 30 days (and many times even faster than that), there are 6 or more issues in production simultaneously: story planning, writing, page roughs, final line art, colors, letter proofing. Each one of those steps can involve constant back and forth with both the art team and editorial. It's a constant flow of new material and that doesn't even count marketing, variant covers, or other development.

Those are the biggest challenges: Being a good communicator, being organized, and keeping the end goal of engaging entertainment in mind while the deadlines are constant.

Three years after our big relaunch, it's wonderful to see support continue for the Age of High Adventure! Thank you for reading and sharing your thoughts with other readers and also letting your local comic retailer know that you enjoy what we're putting together. It means a lot.

One of the more baffling types of AI-generated emails I receive are from 'fellow writers' telling me how much they enjoy my work and encouraging me to reach out. Because Sherryl Woods, the 82-year old best-selling romance author, would use a random gmail address to email a comic book guy.

Actual fame will come when my name gets used in the slop-spam to try and lure other writers. "Holy shit, the writer of Conan the Barbarian loves my small town romance novel!"

Jim Zub @jimzub.com · 27/09/2026
You've written over 300 romance and mystery books and I have over 75 graphic novels, so this will be a fruitful friendship. What's that? You want to recommend an AI slop marketing firm to help my books reach a wider audience? Sounds like a great way to get me on the fast track to writing fame.

And no judgement. Spend time doing what you like. Writing and games are my outlet and career, so that's where I'm focused. Even when I do watch TV/movies, I can't turn off my 'story brain' and analyze narrative choices, technique, and pacing.

Jim Zub @jimzub.com · 26/09/2026
I've never been a sports guy so I don't watch baseball, hockey, football or basketball so, again, that's 1000's of hours not spent watching TV. Reading, research, writing. Books and comics. Games, art, and recipes are more my jam.

Jim Zub @jimzub.com · 26/09/2026
When people ask me how I write so many comics, part of it is that I'm reading and writing more than I am watching TV and movies. And when I get larger blocks of free time I prefer to spend it interacting with video games, board games or TTRPGs.

Jim Zub @jimzub.com · 26/09/2026
I don't watch a ton of TV. Out of these 100 series, I've seen 19 and have finished or am caught up with 11 of them.

We haven't met up in a decade, one of them commented on a photo from the last meet-up and that kicked off conversation that turned into planning for this one. FB Memories actually doing some good instead of dredging up things better left forgotten.

Can’t eat a sandwich until you subscribe to sandwiches. Can’t eat today’s sandwich until it has applied daily sandwich updates. Sandwich now has adverts even though you paid for ad-free sandwich. Can pay again to have less sandwich adverts. Now you can eat the sandwich, but it’s smaller.

It can be monetized in a ridiculous number of ways, but fans of the game also have a ton of agency in terms of deciding where their money goes - independant creations/artists/products instead of a corporate funnel, and the DIY nature of the game endlessly perpetuates that concept.
