from "Hal o' the Draft" in Puck of Pook's Hill by R. Kipling
‘Surely—sure-ly!’ he said, moving up on the window-seat, and returned to his work with a silver-pointed pencil. Puck sat as though the grin were fixed for ever on his broad face, while they watched the quick, certain fingers that copied it. Presently the man took a reed pen from his satchel, and trimmed it with a little ivory knife, carved in the semblance of a fish.

‘Oh, what a beauty!’ cried Dan.

‘’Ware fingers! That blade is perilous sharp. I made it myself of the best Low Country crossbow steel. And so, too, this fish. When his back-fin travels to his tail—so—he swallows up the blade, even as the whale swallowed Gaffer Jonah . . . . Yes, and that’s my ink-horn. I made the four silver saints round it. Press Barnabas’s head. It opens, and then——’ He dipped the trimmed pen, and with careful boldness began to put in the essential lines of Puck’s rugged face, that had been but faintly revealed by the silver-point.

Long ago, when Achulean hand adzes were the latest technology, a girl was left behind by her…family? Tribe? By her group. She had…what? A bad foot? Asthma? Anyway, she couldn't keep up so they left her. Her mother had died the year before and both her brothers before that.

She found herself a place off the game trail where the wolves might not find her too soon as the sun went down, and watched the stars coming out. She slept a little maybe and when she woke a strange face was staring at her. She'd seen strangers before at the year-turnings that her group had been to. At the last one her sister had married a man from another group and left with them. She dreamed sometimes of seeing her sister again. This wasn't the man her sister had married.

This person didn't look like anyone she had ever seen before, even at the year-turnings. They didn't look big enough to be in a hunting party, much less to lead one, but they were wearing a necklace of the pierced shells that came from far away that the hunters in her group kept for themselves. They held up their hand and said something in the language that some of the people she had seen at the year-turnings had used. She put her finger on her lips in the sign for "I don't understand."

"You're one of the Clay-bank People," the person said in her language. "Are you lost?"

"They left me."

"Why did they do that?" the person said, frowning.

"I can't keep up," she said. The person's frown deepened and they turned and gave a piercing whistle. Another appeared out of the darkness and stood looking at her.

"Are you bear-spirits?" the girl said.

"No," the first one said. "We're the People Who Sing." That one had a skin of water and gave her a drink. The other one had a bag decorated with fine beads and gave her three strips of dried meat. It tasted like young venison.

"Is your foot hurt?" asked the first person."Is that why you can't keep up?"

"No," she said. "I can't breathe right sometimes when I try to run."

The story of the Conch Republic
In the Early Reagan Administration, Nancy Reagan and Atty Gen Ed Meese wanted to start having a drug war and after a while someone in the Justice Department noticed that the Florida Keys were ideal for smuggling, being composed of a very large number of islands, sticking WAY out in the ocean.

BUT, some Bad Liberal Judges had told the Justice Department that cops can't just stop people at random on the highway and search 'em for drugs, EVEN THOUGH it's okay for the Immigration and Naturalization Service to stop people on highways and search 'em for illegal immigrants, SO, the Justice Dept got the INS to set up a border checkpoint up around Key Largo, and while the immigration Komitet Gosudarstvennoi Bezopasnosti were checking cars to see that no illegal aliens had driven into the Keys from Cuba or Guatemala or anywhere, Justice's Geheime Staatspolizei were looking over their shoulders to see if these folks had secreted any large bales of marijuana in their back seats.

Traffic backed up from Key Largo to Key West (a distance of 100 miles) and the Mayor complained to the Justice Department, which refused to answer. There are allegations in the official history that a federal judge was BOUGHT OFF.

Key West then seceded from the Union. Key West Naval Air Station was bombarded with loaves of stale French bread. A spontaneous demonstration was organized on Duval Street. An anarchistic government was formed. Some alcoholic beverages may have been consumed. The Conch Republic applied for UN membership. The Justice Department never found any drugs. Several Canadians may have been taken into custody and eventually deported.

The Conch Republic now annually celebrates its independance several times a year.

The UN never answered any of its letters.

The ending to "An Habitation Enforced" by Kipling:
“Here’s the place,” said his father at last among the water forget-me-nots. “But where the deuce are the larch-poles, Cloke? I told you to have them down here ready.”

“We’ll get ’em down if you say so,” Cloke answered, with a thrust of the underlip they both knew.

“But I did say so. What on earth have you brought that timber-tug here for? We aren’t building a railway bridge. Why, in America, half-a-dozen two-by-four bits would be ample.”

“I don’t know nothin’ about that,” said Cloke.

“An’ I’ve nothin’ to say against larch—If you want to make a temp’ry job of it. I ain’t ’ere to tell you what isn’t so, sir; an’ you can’t say I ever come creepin’ up on you, or tryin’ to lead you further in than you set out—”

A year ago George would have danced with impatience. Now he scraped a little mud off his old gaiters with his spud, and waited.

“All I say is that you can put up larch and make a temp’ry job of it; and by the time the young master’s married it’ll have to be done again. Now, I’ve brought down a couple of as sweet six-by-eight oak timbers as we’ve ever drawed. You put ’em in an’ it’s off your mind or good an’ all. T’other way—I don’t say it ain’t right, I’m only just sayin’ what I think—but t’other way, he’ll no sooner be married than we’ll lave it all to do again. You’ve no call to regard my words, but you can’t get out of that.”

“No,” said George after a pause; “I’ve been realising that for some time. Make it oak then; we can’t get out of it.”

This is amazing:
Card’s most recent column, from this May, starts with “This is the column where I predict how American democracy ends.” After issuing the disclaimer that “it’s just a silly thought experiment!” Card spins a yarn in which President Obama creates a National Police Force that answers only to him; rules the country like a mafia don; gets Michelle elected for two terms; and then amends the Constitution to remove term limits for the presidency.

The dead dragon filled the top of the valley, its head on the long neck partially blocking the little stream.

"Well, they smell as bad dead as they do alive," Blocker said, shifting in his saddle to look up into the cirque, and the vast scaly bulk of the thing. "Worse maybe. How long is she going to be, you reckon?"

Ton the outrider jumped down from the streamside rock and gathered his pony's reins. "She comes down now."

Blocker turned his horse down the valley and called to his little troop of Shindo, "Hai! Fall in behind her," he said in din Shin. He was riding his sure-footed mare and turned in the saddle to look back up the valley as the Amershan picked her way among the stream-side boulders.

As she came down the stream her big gelding was not as confident in the rocks as Blocker's mare. The chief priest on his mule apparently knew enough not to try to hurry his mount and the other priests or acolytes or whatever they were scrambled through the rocks on foot. She was well ahead of the ecclesiastical party when she came level with Blocker.

Or any of the Command Master Chiefs.
My dad was a chief in the Navy. He retired in 1945 when there weren’t any Senior Chiefs or Master Chiefs. There were just Chief Petty Officers, who ran the Navy in the way that seemed best to them. Navy enlisted personnel wear hashmarks on their sleeves, one hashmark for each four years of service. At first they are red, like the chevrons of rank, but after 12 years chevrons and hashmarks are gold.

A chief with 25 years in wears a crow, three chevrons and a rocker, for his rank and six gold hashmarks for his length of service. This is a great deal of gold running down his sleeve.

Once a lieutenant j.g. got his feelings hurt and complained to the Captain. Now a Captain in the Navy is called a four-striper because his/her rank is indicated by the four gold stripes encircling the cuff of the uniform coat. A lieutenant junior grade has one stripe. (This is better than an ensign, who only has a half stripe.)

The Captain, none too patiently, listened to the j.g.’s complaint about the Chief’s supposed rudeness, leaned back behind his desk, and pulled on his pipe. “Well, Mr. Smith, even if the Chief was insolent, there’s nothing I can do about it. He’s got more gold on his sleeve than I have.”
