We visited a historic wine cellar yesterday. It was built in 1395. There was a wine press built in 1727, which makes it nearly 50 years older than the country of America. The caves were very cool. And also a steady 60F or so, which was quite nice.

A large wooden wine press in a wine cellar. A heart inlay on the top beam made of lighter wood has the year 1727 carved in it. The wine press is perhaps larger than an American car.

This does not include the random-ass spoons my spouse thrifts that are all the wrong size, weight, and shape that are absolutely wasting an entire space in the flatware drawer, but I guess they make her happy so whatever. Also, pickle forks!

Flatware on an old whiteish counter. Left to right there's a sugar spoon, olive spoon, pickle fork, long pickle fork, malt spoon, and then standard flatware from the same set of a knife, spoon, and fork. Everything is probably stainless steel or some other shiny metal.

So many awesome things about Auckland! The dual T-Rex in a museum entrance. The public restrooms. The gams on the Hoa in the museum exhibit. This tree branch over a sidewalk that is so low even a Hobbit would need to duck to get under it.

A tree at Emily Place Reserve in Auckland, NZ. The enormous tree branches shoot out nearly horizontal from the root of the tree. There's some metal pole trying to hold up one of these massive branches so folks can pass under it on the sidewalk. But you better 🦆.

It's actually an AL mode, a reference to Paul Simon's 1986 folk-rock worldbeat single You Can Call Me Al. The music video featured Paul and Chevy Chase wearing blazers with T-shirts, so it's probably for washing blazers and sport coats.

I always liked this infographic as a way to visualize the scope of the US Gov. Here we can visualize a trillion dollars in Benjamins. The US Gov collected $4.92T in revenue last year, so almost 5 football fields of $100 bills.

Cheesey scalloped potatoes. I tweak it by using more butter and replacing the shredded american cheese with shredded gruyere and extra sharp cheddar. Inexpensive, delicious, and easy. Just takes a long time to make.

Recipe for Scalloped potatoes.
- 1/4 chopped onion
- 2 Tb butter
- 2 Tb all purpose flour
- 1 1/4 cup milk
- 3 medium potato peeled and sliced thin

For sauce, cook onion in butter til tender. Stir in flour, pinch of salt, dash of pepper. Add milk all at once. Cook and stir until thickened and bubbly. Remove from heat. Place half sliced potatoes in greased 1 quart casserole. Cover with half the sauce. Repeat layers. Bake covered at 350F for 35 minutes, uncover and cook for 30 more minutes. Let stand 5 minutes. Serves 4.

Cheesey scalloped potatoes
Prepare as above, except reduce salt. Stir 3/4 cup shredded American cheese into thickened sauce until melted. If desired, sprinkle 1/4 cup cheese on top after baking.
