Despite all the political turbulence in S. Korea, I’m glad to have successfully submitted all my grades, officially marking the end of this quarter. I also received a lovely thank-you card from a former student, which was a wonderful surprise.❤️ Now, I can fully enjoy the start of my winter break!😊

The Korean version of my essay, “Queer Theory Impossible” is reprinted in Munhakdongne’s 30th-anniversary anthology. It critiques the US-centric construction of queer theory and its failure when translated globally, highlighting its entrenchment in privileged institutions of the US.

At yesterday’s DKSC emergency roundtable, we explored feminist/queer perspectives on protests, the politics of remembering/forgetting, and the positionality of US-based Korean scholars, rethinking democracy beyond US-centric Cold War frameworks while interrogating heteropatriarchal nationalism.

Looking to receive feedback on a book in progress? You might wish to provide readers with these questions. I wrote them up for manuscript workshop and they inspired some great, constructive feedback. #academicsky
1) How does the manuscript read as a book?
2) What do you make of the manuscript's structure and the narrative arc? Do the chapters build upon one another? Is the use of themes, as an organizing principle, successful?
3) What are your thoughts on the authorial voice? Is it accessible? Authoritative? Engaging?
4) How would you evaluate the writing style? Is there too much signposting / summary?
5) What do you think of the book's audience(s)? Is the manuscript well-positioned? Would this study be of interest to students and scholars outside of Middle East Studies?
6) What are the manuscript's main interventions? Are they original? Compelling? Coherent?
7) What is the manuscript's central arguments)? Is this / are these sustained throughout the study?
8) What do you believe are the most pressing / important changes to be made to the manuscript prior to submission to a publisher? What does the manuscript stand to gain from these changes?

Wrong headline, NYT. Should read: Impeachment Vote Foiled by Boycott from Yoon's Allies. Ruling party refused to hold the President accountable for what most South Koreans believe was an act of treason. That's the ruling party's failure -- not the opposition's.

Just in: The impeachment vote against President Yoon has failed, as 105 of 108 PPP (ruling party) lawmakers boycotted, leaving the National Assembly short of the required votes. The Democratic Party may reintroduce the impeachment motion as early as next week, but it's going to be a long fight..😡

Sleepless nights continue as Korea’s political situation shifts hour by hour. Hundreds of thousands of people have gathered in front of the National Assembly and across the nation, demanding President Yoon’s impeachment after his reckless decision to impose martial law earlier this week.

Yoon must resign or be impeached for actions that have caused great harm to the nation. Yet the impeachment process remains stalled, blocked by the ruling party. It’s infuriating that the Korean people endure all this pain and immense social costs of one president's incompetence and wrong decisions.

So the South Korean National Assembly voted unanimously to lift martial law. The critical question now is whether Yoon will comply with the resolution and officially lift it. Given the illegal process behind his declaration of martial law, the situation has created grounds for possible impeachment.
