Fanny Mendelssohn, a prodigy from one of Europe’s most influential musical families, composed more than 450 works. Yet she was often told her talent belonged in the private sphere, published under her brother Felix’s name or not at all.
Graphic for DPO’s Take A Stand Women’s History Month series featuring a historical portrait of Fanny Mendelssohn. She faces the viewer, wearing period attire with curled hair. Text beside her reads “Fanny Mendelssohn — Composer & Pianist, 1805–1847,” with the Take A Stand logo in the corner.

Jessie Montgomery: Starburst (Hidden Treasure, 2023 🏴‍☠️) Starburst distills Montgomery’s voice into three brilliant minutes: swirling lines, bright gestures, and the quick, kinetic energy of new stars forming. Written for the Sphinx Virtuosi, it flashes with the same vibrancy that defines her work.

This March, we’re celebrating champions and visionaries: women who composed in the shadows, fought for a place on the podium, carved out space in male‑dominated halls, and reshaped the sound of the stage—often without the recognition they deserved.
Collage graphic for DPO’s Take A Stand Women’s History Month series featuring four historical portraits of notable women. A central banner with the DPO logo reads “Take A Stand — Women’s History Month.”
