Confession: orchestras weren't always seen as buttoned-up. "Stuffy" didn't show up until the late 1800s, when critics decided "serious" music needed its own hushed corner 🎻 It's #ClassicalMusicMonth, let's dig in...and keep breaking the stigma
A darkened concert photo with bright text reading: “It’s Classical Music Month. Let’s talk a little history… about the invention of symphonic snobbery.” The DPO logo and “Scott O’Neil, Music Director” appear at the top, with a white arrow icon below.Split graphic titled “Gatekeeping.” The left side, “Where We Came From,” describes early orchestras mixing genres freely—an 1845 concert paired Beethoven’s Prometheus Overture with a novelty song—and 18th‑ and 19th‑century “Promenade Concerts” held in London’s pleasure gardens with fireworks and masquerades. The right side, “Where We Are Now,” highlights DPO’s inclusive programming that blends classics with contemporary and underrepresented composers, plus free outdoor concerts and brewery events like Oktoberfest at Diebolt Brewing.Another “Gatekeeping” comparison. The left side explains how late‑1800s critics and conductors separated “serious” orchestral music from popular entertainment, creating a divide between “high” and “low” art—a process historians call the sacralization of culture. The right side shows DPO’s modern approach: “serious” music and fun coexist through More Than Music events featuring games, crafts, costumes, tastings, and community celebration around every concert.

Quick gut check: who do you think used to get to hear an orchestra play? If you guessed "basically just kings and rich people," ding ding 🛎️ It's #ClassicalMusicMonth, let's dig in...and keep breaking the stigma
A darkened photo of the orchestra performing on stage with bright text reading: “It’s Classical Music Month. Let’s talk a little history… about who used to get to listen.” The DPO logo and “Scott O’Neil, Music Director” appear at the top, with a white arrow icon below.Split graphic titled “Access.” The left side, “Where We Came From,” explains that composers once served royal patrons—Haydn spent decades writing for the Esterházy family—and orchestral music was confined to courts, churches, and private salons. The right side, “Where We Are Now,” highlights DPO’s open‑door policy: no one turned away for cost, Pay‑What‑You‑Can tickets starting at $1, and free or discounted offers shared year‑round.Another “Access” comparison. The left side notes early paid concerts in 1672 London, subscription‑based exclusivity in the 1700s, and rising ticket prices by the 1800s. The right side shows DPO’s modern inclusivity: free admission for youth 18 and under through YouthTIX, and affordable pricing—$30 general, $20 for seniors, military, healthcare workers, and first responders, $12 for students.

Look, we know classical music has a reputation: stuffy, uptight, hold-your-breath-till-intermission energy. It's #ClassicalMusicMonth. Let's talk about where that stereotype actually came from, because the history is a lot less buttoned-up than the reputation lets on. First up: concert etiquette 🎩
A darkened photo of a concert hall audience with bright text reading: “It’s Classical Music Month. Let’s talk a little history… about why you started getting shushed.” The DPO logo and “Scott O’Neil, Music Director” appear at the top, with a white arrow icon below.Split graphic titled “Concert Etiquette.” The left side, labeled “Where We Came From,” lists historical norms: audiences once talked, ate, and applauded mid‑performance; Mozart and Beethoven welcomed spontaneous applause; by the mid‑19th century, silence became the rule to preserve focus. The right side, “Where We Are Now,” explains DPO’s modern approach—welcoming both applause traditions, encouraging clapping whenever it feels right, and inviting photos and social posts (no flash).Another “Concert Etiquette” comparison. The left side notes that 19th‑century concerts were formal events requiring evening wear and white‑tie attire. The right side, titled “Come as you are!,” highlights DPO’s inclusive culture: no dress code, theme‑inspired outfits welcome, and one rule—have fun.
