This fall I’m doubling down on East Bay life. Gratefully, this means less car-centricity 😮‍💨 I walk to my weekly farmers market in 4 blocks. Walk to a few amazing groceries. Walk to a great bakery. Great Mexican, Taiwanese, burger & fries, Thai, pizza, sushi. My community garden around the corner… 🙏🏻

I’ve tolerated this line of inquiry since I was a teenager. As a 6'4" body it’s common to be subject to a near-weekly rotation of the following: if I play basketball (I don’t), if I can grab a thing from the tall shelf (I absolutely shall), if the temps differ up here. But from her it was sweet. 💖

After my response, she threw me a look that suggested she was confused or caught off guard. I took out one earbud and said “Sorry, I didn’t hear you.” She smiled a beautiful smile of acknowledgment & understanding. “How’s the weather up there,” she asked again. “It’s thinner and cold,” I smiled.

An older, white-haired Black woman gestures and points to the machine I’m sitting on. Without hearing her, I say, “I’m done, just gonna wipe it down.” In my defense, this is 95% of the interactions with anybody at the gym — almost like no words are needed. My assumption, again, was incorrect.

Two delightful interactions from this past week: 1: Venice Beach. I arrive solo, and start to put on SPF. I’m standing, scoping the scene. A presumably straight white guy on a neighboring blanket asks, bluntly, as I’m looking in their direction, “Can I help you,” in a way that wasn’t a question.
